Chapter 17

THEY WORKED HARD ALL WEEK. Saff could even form her blades, though not for long, and not nearly as rigid as they would need to be for catching a breeze or extended fighting. One of the hardest tasks for Saff was separating her emotions from her energy. But she had it down enough that they felt fairly comfortable she could get through a school day and be safe. They would, of course, avoid extreme emotions and circumstances as much as they could, just as a precaution.

“I’m really proud of you. I mean it,” Devin praised her the night before they were to drive home. “Now, I told you a while ago that there was something else I could teach you, about energy transfer.” He sat down on the sofa. “It goes against everything I’ve taught you so far. Want to spice things up?”

Still standing on the other side of the living room, she rubbed her chin. “With that introduction, how could I resist?”

“So,” he said, blushing, “it’s a tradition when sending off a male you love.” He quickly added, “Nothing too scandalous. And no pressure, if you’re not ready.”

“Okay...” Her interest was sufficiently piqued.

He fidgeted awkwardly with his hands. “So, instead of channeling the energy to your hands to share, and instead of suppressing the energy when you kiss, you can actually imbue him with energy while you kiss.”

“Oooh, that sounds like a challenge I’m willing to take on.” She smirked, then dragged over a kitchen chair and sat directly in front of him. “Just like a regular kiss, right? But focus on where the energy is going?”

He nodded with a shy smile. “It’s supposed to be pretty ... amazing.”

“You don’t say. I think what we’ve got already is pretty amazing.”

His face turned a couple of different shades of pink.

Devin was Saff’s first boyfriend, and while they hadn’t talked about him possibly having a previous relationship, she realized it wasn’t likely. Given the slim pickings back home... She felt a little more nervous.

“So you haven’t, um...” she started to ask.

“Your first kiss was my first kiss.”

She loved that. He could be confident and borderline cocky, and she wondered how much of that was his training. But at the heart of it, they were sharing this journey, these special moments together.

“I, uh,” he paused, clearing his throat “well, you know, planned on kissing you to confirm that your eyes would glow, when I suspected your change.” He looked her dead in the eyes. “I got carried away, I ... really... Gosh, Saff.”

She remembered it well, licking her lips. She’d never envisioned her first kiss being a full make-out session, French kiss and all. But she had zero regrets.

“Anyway.” He let out a short breathy chuckle. “We kissed enough to make your hair change—that’s indicative of more emotion than the simpler stuff that does just the eyes.” He sat up straighter. “But ... if you’re not ready, we can try this another time.”

She smiled at his sweetness. “It’s a kiss. I can handle a kiss.
