RCHER TAKES A DETOUR HOME and walks up Blackfriars Road, stopping at a recently built block of modern council flats. She presses Flat 9 on the intercom.
âHello,â comes a familiar voice.
âCosmo. Itâs Grace.â
After a pause he says, âIâll .â.â. Iâll be right down, Grace.â
Archer figures he does not want his wife to witness him being grilled by her.
Fair enough.
He appears moments later, looking sheepish. âHello, Grace â cold tonight. How are you?â
Archer cuts straight to the chase. âAre you going to tell me whatâs been going on?â
Cosmoâs bushy grey eyebrows rise in surprise. He shifts on his feet with a look of faux confusion. âNot sure what you mean, Grace.â
Archer is not in the mood for this game. âWhy were you and Grandad talking with Troy Whitehouse last night in the Kingâs Tavern?â
Cosmoâs face drops. âH-how did you know?â
Archer wonders if Grandad is not the only one with dementia.
âYou werenât hard to miss.â
âShit! I knew this was a damn foolâs errand. Shit!â
Archer folds her arms, waiting with a patient front that she is just not feeling.
âHow on earth did you get mixed up with Whitehouse?â
Cosmo looks away from her and begins to wring his hands together. âGrace, Iâm sorry. I didnât know what to do. Jake insisted and I thought he just wanted some muscle, you know?â
âWhy would he want muscle from Whitehouse?â
A pained expression shrouds his face. âIâm sorry, Grace. So sorry. I thought I could do better with Jake. I really did .â.â.â
Cosmo doesnât seem able to find the words.
âTell me what Grandad wanted from Whitehouse.â
Cosmo shifts back and forth on his feet, avoiding Archerâs gaze.
âCosmo?â
Cosmo casts his eyes downward. âA gun. He wanted a gun.â
Archer feels her stomach lurching.
Cosmo continues, âJake saw the article about Frankie White and went bananas. Iâve never seen him so upset, so angry. He cried, Grace, wept in my arms. We sat in St Patrickâs for three hours and I thought being there might calm him down, but it seemed to do the opposite. He wanted to scream and tear the place down. Honestly, Grace, I thought he was about to have another stroke.â
âWhat was he planning to do with the gun?â
Archer suspects she knows what the answer to that question is but wants to hear it from Cosmo.
âHe wants to shoot White. Kill him dead for what heâs done.â
Archer closes her eyes and sighs.
Cosmo pulls his coat together to stay warm. âHeâll go mad at me for telling you.â
A chill runs down Archerâs spine. She shudders in the cold and thrusts her hands deeper into her coat pockets in a vain attempt to warm them.
âThereâs something else. He kept going on about a secret â a secret that heâd just discovered.â
âWhat secret?â
âI donât know, but whatever it is, itâs eating him alive, and I donât doubt itâs to do with Frankie White.â
Archerâs mind races.
âPromise you wonât say anything, Grace!â
âI canât promise anything, but I will deal with this.â
âGrace .â.â.â
âIâve already dealt with Troy Whitehouse. So donât contact him again, or anyone like him, Cosmo.
