After Nell had repaired her makeup in the bathroom, she went downstairs. The kitchen had been restored to some kind of order, and Elsie was standing by the sink chatting to Mary. “Join us, Nell,” Elsie called, something in the quality of her smile catching at Nell’s throat.

Nell picked up a brownie from one of the trays still out on the table. “Just as well I’ll only be coming to one of your parties, Elsie. I’d be as big as a barrel otherwise.”

Mary said, “Don’t you wave that brownie too close to my nose, Nell. I’ve been real good and resisted dessert so far. And how d’you know you’re only goin’ to be at one of Elsie’s parties?”

“Sooner or later, I’ve got to go back to Holland,” Nell said with a touch of desperation and felt the words like a death knell. How could a place—and a man—have wrought such a change in her?

“Well, don’t be in such an all—fired hurry,” Mary said tartly. Then she turned to the other woman. “What d’you think, Elsie? Has Charlie had enough beer that he’ll get up and dance?”

“He looked pretty laid—back the last time I saw him.”

“That’s one of the things I like about Charlie,” Mary said. “He doesn’t get into the beer very often, but when he does, he’s a happy drunk. Maybe I’ll go and check him out” She gave a gamine smile. “And introduce this kid of ours to a Newfie reel.”

Rubbing at the small of her back, she headed for the deck, where the noise level had risen considerably.

“She’s a sweetheart,” Nell said. “I love to see married couples who stay in love. There was a Canadian couple who lived in the village where I grew up. They were in their forties when I first met them and they used to touch each other all the time. That sounds sappy, I suppose, but it actually wasn’t”

“Were your parents in love, Nell?”

Trust Elsie to ask the critical question. “No,” Nell replied slowly, “no, I don’t think so.”

“Looks to me as though Kyle is falling in love with you.”

Nell said warmly, “Oh, no, he’s not,” and blushed.

“Just because I’m seventy—seven years old doesn’t mean you can’t talk to me about sex,” Elsie said with some of Mary’s tartness. “Sexual attraction and love aren’t always nicely distinguishable, you know. One of them very tidily over here and the other very tidily over there.”

The pink in Nell’s cheeks deepened. “I’ve never made love with anyone,” she muttered, then grimaced in selfdisgust. “I don’t know what’s happening to me! Ever since I got off the plane in St. John’s, it’s as though I’ve turned into someone else. You’re the only person in the whole world who knows that, and if you so much as drop a hint to Kyle, I—” she searched for a suitably appropriate threat “—I won’t wait for the boat I’ll swim to Caplin Bay.”

Unimpressed, Elsie passed Nell a dish towel. “Here, dry these cups. Are you in love with Kyle?”

“I want to go to bed with Kyle.
