Chapter Eighteen

LUKE

“Another beer, please?”

I called and waved to the bartender, who was busy chatting up with some blonde and her friend at the other end of the bar. With an annoyed look on his face, the man walked over, grabbed another bottle out of the refrigerator and slammed it down on the bar in front of me. Without saying a word, he turned and walked back to where the girls sat to continue his conversation.

I twisted off the cap and tossed it behind the bar, bouncing it off the mirror. The man looked down at me, that irritated look painting his features again. I raised my bottle to and took a drink.

“Great service. It only took you ten minutes to get me another one,” I called. “Remind me to leave you a good review on Yelp, brother.”

The bartender, easily six foot two probably weighed about two hundred and thirty pounds. He had a shaved head, a thick goatee, and was covered in tats. I figured he probably owned a Harley and thought he was a badass. But I could tell by the slow footed, almost clumsy way he moved that he wouldn't be much of a match for me. I figured that he relied on his size and intimidating appearance to get out of most fights – he looked like a mean with a mean streak.

But then, he probably hadn't run across anybody like me before – somebody who wasn't intimidated by somebody who simply looked mean. Somebody who wouldn't run from a fight just because a man looked a little rough around the edges. Somebody who could take care of himself in a scrap.

And given the foul mood I was in, I wasn't shying away from a scrap at that moment.

“You got a problem?” the bartender asked me, staring at me hard.

I took a sip of my beer, my eyes never leaving his. The anger coursing through my body was as thick as the stench of stale liquor and cigarettes in the bar. The man snuck a look back at the girls he'd been talking to – who were both watching intently. Obviously, this man wanted to have a bigger dick contest with me in front of them. Wanted to show them what a manly man he was.

A smile tugged at the corner of my mouth. “Not really,” I replied. “Just wanted to let you know that you kinda suck at your job.”

“Is that so?”

I nodded and took another sip of my beer. “That's a fact.”

The man looked me up and down, no doubt sizing me up. I was in shape, but I wasn't a muscle-bound behemoth. I was more lean and toned than rocked up like some of the guys I'd served with. Speed was the name of my game.

He took a look back at the girls again and grinned. “You sure like to run your mouth.”

I shrugged. “Just tryin' to help you out, brother,” I said. “Tips are bound to be better if you even pretend like you give a shit.
