Fourteen

By midmorning we were back on our horses and making our way a little faster than before. I looked around at the familiar terrain surrounding us. Vegetation always seemed to be at a minimum no matter what time of year here in Gilvary. It was warm in June, but there was a crispness to the morning air that reminded you that winter had just passed and would be coming around again soon. There was a chance that I would miss living here, but I was so looking forward to what the future held in store.

Everyone was still surrounding Brianna and me, but even Gwen stayed far enough away for the two of us to talk privately. I decided to use this opportunity to get to know my wife. “You mentioned that there was one person you wished to see you wed that was not present. Who would that be?”

Her face lit up. I loved her smile. It always showed up at the most unexpected times. “Agata was my nursemaid, well, actually she still takes care of me even now. Of course no one could replace my parents but she, Eamon, and Gwen have filled in as sort of a replacement family.”

I took note of her feelings toward these three people. I understood better why she found it necessary to adopt a family. I imagined her life would have been very lonely without them. I already liked Gwen. That part was easy. I would take special care when I met this Agata. But Eamon might be a problem.

“Your pretend family is better than my real one.”

“You seem close to Reagan.”

“That is a recent development. It is a shame to say that we had to become adults before we learned to value each other. I am sure you can guess that I have never been my father’s favorite. It used to make me jealous until I matured enough to realize he was doing the rest of the family no kindness at all. Just look at how his favoritism has crippled Dunbar and Rian. He has favored Reagan as well, but not to the point that it has affected his nature. It also helps that we are close in age. So, I guess it makes sense that I would end up being drawn to Reagan more than the others.”

Her brows were slightly creased. It seemed as if she was trying to make the puzzle of my family come together. “So, were you not close to any of them before now?”

“It goes without saying that I do have a special relationship with Terence. I would never want to leave him out. I know he will not understand why I have left, and that bothers me.”

“I can see why that would upset you. Hopefully he will handle it better than you think. What about your mother? Are you not close to her?”

“I know she loves me, but it is complicated. She has done her best to shield me, but she will never go against Father.” I reached across and took her hand, running my thumb across the ring I had given her.
