Chapter Twenty-Four

This wasn’t happening.

John wanted to run, to throw his luggage at her, to scream at the top of his lungs and let the insanity out. Because if this was real, his life was over.

“This is Becca.” Vicky stood, beaming, and walked toward John. “She. Is. Amazing.”

Lottie followed. She held out her hand to John, smiling, her eyes sparkling, her perfect skin practically glowing. She was the same, but different somehow. Her posture was less slouched — not that it was frumpy before. But now she walked erect enough to have a line of kindergartners marching behind her.

Not knowing what else to do except maybe die right there on the living room carpet, he held out his hand. “John.”

“Victoria said that you’re a writer! I can’t believe that. Is writing books, like, the best job in the world?”

Fuck me. Is she really going to do this?

“It’s a good job.”

“What’s wrong, honey?” Vicky asked John, looking concerned. “Was it the delay?”

He was drenched in sweat. Hell, maybe he’d shit his pants and had yet to smell it.

“I’m sorry. It’s been a really long week.” He held up his carry-on, then glanced down at his rolling bag. “Mind if I just get settled in for a few minutes?”

“Of course,” Vicky said, still beaming. “I just wanted you to meet Becca.”

“I’m so glad to be here. I’m your Help,” Lottie said, laughing. “Victoria wanted a different name for nanny. I said, ‘You can call me whatever you want once I work for you, but I’m here to help you with whatever you need, so you might want to start there.’ So Help it is — like the book!”

John had no idea what to say to that. He managed a bone-dry “Thank you for helping us.”

Then he went to his room, hoping to avoid Dakota and Evie. He couldn’t see them right now — he couldn’t see anyone right now. Were his girls even home? He had no idea. Maybe they were at the park.

He closed his bedroom door.

His heart was pounding, his head was splitting, his frayed nerves were peeling into crippling splinters.

Why was she doing this?

What was her game?

And if Lottie was the eventual winner . . . what would that mean for John as the loser?

Fortunately, this would be over soon. There was zero chance that Vicky would actually hire her. Surely she could see through those phony glasses and conservative clothes. His wife was paranoid to a fault.

And that meant that John could handle this. All he had to do was go back into the living room and take care of this situation like a man.

After taking a moment to gather his calm, John marched into the living room. Lottie was no longer there, but Vicky bounded up to him, her eyes and smile equally wide. She threw her arms around him and kissed him on the cheek like he might have expected, and then on the mouth like he didn’t.

“I’m so glad you’re home. Dakota and Evie are playing out back.
