Chapter 46

I would say that I hate being right all the time, but I would be lying.

In this situation, however, I am disappointed. The destruction is somewhere between my apartment and Brandon's. Some things look to be damaged for the simple sake of it, but the office and other places where Gran stored documents were looted the worst. I call the police while Evan calls Mr. Talbert for another copy of the list of valuables in the house, even though we already removed them, and he decides to personally bring it to be with us in case he is needed for legal help and advice. I provided dispatch with the information of our last call and the information of the officers that came out since I have no doubt everything is connected.

The same officers respond, and we repeat the same song and dance. Evan and I both suspect his Uncle Patrick, so we have no problems laying the possible blame at his feet. Mr. Talbert happily not only corroborates our story, but also provides them with additional information. We also mention Ryan and the fact that he's missing after the death of their grandmother to keep the ruse up.

By the time Mr. Talbert and the officers leave I have to go into work. Brandon stayed an extra hour for me so I could help Evan finish things up, but I don’t feel right calling out again after missing a week. Neither Evan nor Brandon want to sit at home tonight, so they decide to hit the sports bar in the shopping center for a few hours then come back to the store and play video games on the big screen while they wait until I'm off so we can all head home together. Evan gets along great with my friends and the night goes by quickly, though being surrounded by books makes me mourn what I've lost that much harder. I can always replace them, but some were gifts, and the ones from my dad can never be replaced.

Daniel texted me several times throughout the day and evening to check on me, continuously offering to come and check things out or stay over if I feel unsafe. I had to tell him about Gran's house too in case he already knew or checked into the cases, and that seems to make him believe Ryan was the culprit. It takes the reminders that I have a high tech alarm system and that Brandon and Evan will both be at the cabin with me for him to relent, but he presses on scheduling dinner again. After speaking with the guys, we settle on two days from now. Brandon and I are both off for the evening, and Evan will be off of work at the same time I am, so the timing is perfect.

Now I'm just worried the anticipation will kill me before I can kill him.
