Sierra

Sierra stops as she finds herself in a living room. The apartment looks like Ryder’s car—smooth and modern, but lacking any real personality. She steps around a cream leather couch, her feet sinking into thick pale carpet. It’s open plan, so the dining table isn’t far away, a small kitchen beyond it. A hallway goes to what she assumes are the bedrooms.

But it’s what’s on the glass dining table that catches her attention. A stack of books, all leather bound, all with thick, aged paper.

There are only six in the pile, but that’s probably a good thing. Sierra doesn’t have powers like Blaise to have them hovering around her, waiting to read. They’ll be going through these one at a time.

She walks toward them. “These are Kane’s?”

Ryder shuts the door and joins her. “Yep. He’s been collecting these for a long time.”

“These are pretty ancient.” They remind her of the tomes lining the shelves of Veritas. In fact, that’s probably where they belong. “How did he get them?”

He blinks. “I’ve never asked.”

Sierra looks back to the books. She suspects there are a lot of questions Ryder hasn’t asked. “Does Kane know you have them? That I’ll be looking at them?”

“I don’t have any secrets to hide from Kane. He knows I’m working with you to find the Grail.”

So Kane has Ryder doing his dirty work. She wonders if Kane’s aware of what’s blossoming between her and Ryder. Whether he sees that Ryder’s good. That he wants more than this empty, greedy existence.

She doubts it. Ryder doesn’t even seem aware of it. She just has to decide whether she’s the person to point it out to him.

Sierra takes a seat and pulls the top book off the pile. The brown leather is dark along the edges, but pale and worn across the front. There’s no title.

She flips through the pages, seeing the lines and lines of carefully printed words. “It would’ve made life easier if they’d invented tables of contents,” she mutters.

Ryder chuckles. “I’ll make us some coffee.”

Sierra pretends she doesn’t note the fluid way he rises, or the snug way his jeans fit over his hips, legs, butt… She drags her gaze back to the book. Focus, Sierra. Her interest in Ryder can’t be deeper than a means to find the Grail.

As he moves around the kitchen, brewing coffee, she flips through the thick vellum pages and scans the contents. What she learned about Uriel blessing the Grail has really stuck in her mind. The story touches on the creation of the ancient artifact. It’s how it was hidden in the first place.

“Have you read these?” she asks, wondering if Ryder could point her in the right direction.

“A couple of them. I’m more of a hands on kinda guy.” With a jolt, he turns away, pulling down two mugs from an overhead cupboard.

Sierra returns to the book, her stomach coiling into knots. He’s talking about things like Jake. Ryder’s little more than Kane’s runner boy. A hit man in the making.
