Desi

NEW York had been painful.

Desi was glad to be back in the office. She shut her glass door and eased into her chair. This morning, she’d jogged to and from her Pilates studio and grabbed a green juice and turmeric oat milk latte from her favorite café. Oh, the joys of city conveniences.

On the way into work, she’d smiled at everyone she passed, that urban energy seeping into her bones and reminding her of where she truly belonged. Here, she could forget about what happened this summer and try to scout out some shred of normalcy. At her desk, she hammered out a few emails and organized her three main tasks for the day.

Her team was relieved to have her back and had thrown her a small welcome party, complete with a cake, though they were now past the fanfare and deep into work mode. She had so many homes out on bids and a few others she needed to close. She couldn’t believe how much she’d missed the art of the sale, of walking into someone’s home or company and showing them that with a new design, they could have a better life.

Desi spun around in her chair to grab a set of plans. On the bookshelf above was a photo of her and Peter at their wedding. She retrieved the photo, squinting at the two of them. Peter had never looked better, in his three-piece suit, his lips stretched into a genuine smile. He was dipping her during their first dance. Her head was thrust back, her ivory lace gown flowing behind her. They’d gotten married at the Four Seasons in front of all their family and friends.

She placed it back on the shelf. What a farce. Every time she looked at the photo, she felt foolish and naïve. She’d had such high hopes for the woman in the photo, but she’d disappointed herself and those around her over and over again.

She spun back around, plans in hand, and lost herself in work. But her thoughts kept slipping back to New York and how angry Jules had been with her—how angry she still was. She wished Jules understood that college could be the time of her life. She didn’t need to be tied down, and sooner or later, she’d come to understand that she was right.

Since they’d gotten back, Peter had turned even more silent and moody. He’d barely said two words to her on the plane ride home. She understood that Jules leaving for Columbia was a loss. They both needed time, but especially Peter. While he had his work too, it didn’t fulfill him as much as hers did. At least she had her company.

By the time Desi looked up, it was lunchtime. She removed her glasses, stood and stretched, and told the team she’d be back in an hour.

Her office was right in the middle of River North, and anything she wanted was at her fingertips. She decided to pick up a quick lunch and clear her head.
