CHAPTER 10

Showered and wrapped in my robe, I searched my wardrobe for something that screamed human tribute. Leather, Lycra, and denim glared back at me defiantly. Bane had instructed me to look demure and unthreatening. I needed a simple dress, something cream or white. But dresses weren’t my thing. Did I even own one? Maybe Cassie would have something I could borrow? Orin had popped in earlier to tell me she was conscious and alert. Tristan had been to see her in the early hours of the morning while I’d been asleep.

A short rap on the door interrupted my musings. “Come in.”

I grabbed a pair of jeans and a tank top, then shut the wardrobe. I turned to find Rivers standing in the doorway.

“Hey.”

He stepped into the room and shut the door behind him. “Bane thought you may need a top-up before you bring the shields down.” A ghost of a smile played on his lips. “A little treat for your daimon for being so accommodating.”

My daimon purred in appreciation. “Just give me a moment to get dressed and—”

“No need.” He walked toward me and my insides clenched in awareness.

This wasn’t the reserved Rivers I was used to. This was the persona he’d donned in the secret lair—the hawk man with the unflinching, penetrating gaze and the icy confidence to do what needed to be done. I took a step back on reflex and then locked my knees to prevent another. What was I doing? This was Rivers. There was nothing to be afraid of. And yet my stomach quivered in warning as he came to stand inches in front of me. The air between us fizzed and popped. His attention was on my mouth, my neck, my chest, and then on the lip of the robe covering my breasts. His throat bobbed, the only sign of the Rivers I knew.

“I need to touch you,” he said.

I let out a choked laugh. “You’ll find it’s me that needs to touch you to feed.”

He dragged his gaze from my chest back up to my face, and our gazes locked tight. “No. I need to touch you.”

“Oh.” The word was a tiny explosion of breath.

“Slide the robe off,” he said. “Slide it off so I can see you.”

It wasn’t a request. It was a command. I didn’t do commands, except I was complying. I was shrugging the robe off my shoulders. It slid down, barely covering my breasts, leaving me exposed to his hungry, predatory gaze. He cupped my bare shoulders and slowly slid his hands down my arms and then back up again. It was a simple caress but sexy as hell.

“Rivers, I—”

“Quiet.” It was a breathless demand.

I snapped my mouth closed. The pulse at my throat pounded as his fingers skimmed my collarbones. The heels of his hands brushed the tops of my breasts, and heat spiked through me, igniting a slow throb between my legs.

He leaned in. “Open the robe, Serenity. I need to see all of you.”

What was I doing? Why was I doing this? Because I wanted him to see me.
