CHAPTER 1

Rachel

Sitting in the restaurant on the Savannah River, Rachel sat listening to the young man she’d brought into the world talk about his upbringing. She was fascinated and didn’t even notice that her breakfast was getting cold. Meeting her biological son at this point in their lives was certainly a miracle. Questions clamored in her head.

She wanted to know everything about Matthew. Where had he gone to grade school and high school? What had been his favorite subjects? She knew he was an IT specialist so he had probably studied technology. Was he dating anyone?

And what about his sister? What about the little girl she'd also given up when she was in her early twenties and didn't know what to do? Back then, Rachel’s whole world had been dissolving around her. She’d taken the one step that would give her two babies a future filled with hope and love. At least, that’s what she’d told herself back then. Years had passed. Now Matthew had made an effort to find her. He’d had a job interview in Atlanta and they’d arranged this short meeting in a Savannah restaurant. But what about her baby girl?

Hitching up one shoulder, Matthew looked out at the container ship coming down the Savannah River, headed for the open sea and who knows where. "Abby is a hard one to figure.”

“What do you mean?” For years she’d closed her mind about the twins she'd had to give up. But now that Matthew had contacted her, now that they were sitting in this Savannah restaurant, she wanted to know everything. And yet, she had no right. Did she? Rachel sat back, wishing Sylvia or Julep were here to calm her, to give her good advice.

When Matthew sighed, she was ready to give up. The waitress arrived and he asked for more coffee. “I'll have the same," she said, not in any hurry to leave. "What about your flight back to Milwaukee?"

Taking out his phone he tapped in a few things. “Moved back to three o'clock so I have plenty of time. Are you supposed to be somewhere?" Glancing up and smiling, he put his phone away.

All she could do was shake her head. “No, I guess I'm right where I'm supposed to be.” Talking to him was taking her back thirty-two years, and she was in no hurry to leave. The waitress returned with a carafe of coffee and filled their cups. Rachel wanted to fill the gaps in her life in much the same way. This afternoon, she felt like this empty mug. This young man, one of the twins she had given up so long ago, held the answers to questions that would pop into her mind at random times over the years. She’d learned to sternly beat them back, knowing that one question would lead to another until the unanswered question became like a bruise. It would take time to heal.

After pouring two creams into his coffee, Matthew gave her a crooked smile.
