Chapter Twenty-Three

Raul

“Look, Derek, until after the new year, we can't get her out of here.”

“I know, but if we can have a plan set, it will be easier.” He points out as my mobile phone starts going off.

“Si, Zach, what's up?”

“The girls slipped out while I was in the bathroom. Kat just called, they’re being followed.”

“They what?”

“They're gone.”

“Bloody hell.”

“I tracked them but they're on the move. Heading their way now.”

“I'll find out where they are,” I yell into my phone.

I hang up on him and know I'll take this out on him later. I dial her mobile and I can tell I’m on speaker when she answers. I can hear noises in the background and the car accelerating.

“Raul.”

“Where are you?” I'm so angry right now. I run for my car and start to jump in.

“We're on the Ronda de Dalt. They're chasing us and shooting.” I hear the gunfire.

“Why did you ditch Zach? Which direction are you heading?”

“I'll explain later. We're heading to Badalona from the monastery.”

Derek opens his tablet and pulls up her tracking chip. I hear the Porsche rev up and know if she were in the open she'd outrun whoever is after her, but she's in evening traffic.

“Raul, second vehicle,” she yells through the line.

Bloody hell, she's going to be trapped. I hear the brakes squealing, followed by the sounds of scraping metal and crunching glass.

“Daniella. Mi amor,” I yell into the phone as Kathryn screams and Daniella cries out in pain. Then my wife says the words that stop my heart.

“Te amo. Adiós, marido.”

The line goes dead and I drop to my knees at my door. My world just stopped. She told me she loves me, then said goodbye. Just last night I decided I was going to do everything to keep her, and now she's being taken from me.

I'll kill whoever did this. If Juan had anything to do with it I'll never fulfill our bargain. I'll kill him with my bare hands.

“Get the fuck up off the ground and get in. They're near the hospital,” Derek yells at me from across the car.

When I don't move, he walks over to me and stands in front of me. He bends down and gets into my face.

“Get your ass in the mother fucking passenger seat, I'm driving.”

“I can't lose her.” I hear the hitch in my voice.

“Yeah, well let’s go. Zach is on his way to the scene.”

“Derek, she told me she loved me.”

“I know she does, brother. Man up and go get her back.”

“How did you go through this?” I ask him. My heart feels like it's crumbling in my chest.

“Not very well. But yours is still alive and she'll fight with everything in her.”

“Thank you, mi amigo.”

“Brothers,” he says as he claps me on the shoulder.

I see the pain I'm feeling reflected in his eyes. I hope she fights and I don't have to go through what he's gone through.

I slip into the passenger seat as he takes off and heads toward the university hospital.
