CHAPTER NINE

JASPER

The timer for the sauce goes off, and I stir the pan before turning the heat down to a simmer. The smell of homemade alfredo sauce permeates the kitchen, and I smile to myself, knowing I’ve nailed this dish. Crispy, hand-breaded chicken is baking in the oven, homemade noodles are ready to be tossed into a pot of boiling water as soon as the time comes, and the garlic rosemary alfredo sauce is coming along quite nicely.

I’ve always enjoyed cooking. After my mom ran off, I took over a lot of the day-to-day tasks around the house while my father underwent cancer treatment. I started out with simple, staple meals, then incorporated new flavors and dishes. With my father’s cancer, I also learned how to substitute certain ingredients to fit whatever diet they had him on at the time.

Over the years, I’ve continued to hone my cooking skills, always coming back to the kitchen when I’m stressed or overworked. It’s been a while since I’ve made anything this involved since I just cook for one these days. I’ve enjoyed getting lost in the recipe and using my kitchen to its full capacity again.

A soft knock on the front door has my heart hammering in my chest. She’s here.

I couldn’t concentrate at work knowing my Faye was going to be with me tonight. I ended up leaving early, something I never do, and headed straight to the grocery store to pick up the best ingredients for dinner.

Taking a deep breath, I wipe my hands off on a kitchen towel and head to the door. I open it up at suck in a breath at the breathtaking beauty standing on my doorstep.

“Faye,” I whisper, my eyes roaming up and down her body.

She’s in a casual outfit, the leggings, tank top, and patterned sweater cardigan somehow making her more irresistible than any fancy dress I’ve seen her in. She looks soft and sweet, though the spark in her purple eyes reminds me there’s so much more beneath the surface.

“What smells so good?” she asks, peeking behind my shoulder. I realize I’ve just been standing here, staring at her.

“Crispy chicken alfredo,” I finally respond, moving to the side to invite her in. Faye only makes it a few steps inside before I close the door and pin her to it. “Missed you,” I murmur before I take her lips in an all-consuming kiss.

Faye sighs when we break apart, swaying toward me with a dazed look in her eyes. I know the feeling. I lose track of time and space when we’re touching.

“Wow,” she breathes out, nibbling her bottom lip. “I definitely wasn’t making up how good of a kisser you are.” Her cheeks burn bright red at her confession, and I’m guessing she didn’t mean to say that part out loud.

“Glad you approve,” I chuckle, going in for another taste of her lips. Faye parts them for me, welcoming my tongue as it slides against hers. Reluctantly, I pull away from my addicting woman, grinning when she pouts.
