Chapter Eleven – Ion
“She’s been bitten,” Ion said, looking at the two marks on Etta’s neck. “A snakebite.”
“Which means that snake is close,” Will said. “Take her back to the hangout. Call Dr. Ben. We’ll try to track down the person who did this.”
Will moved off through the trees, and Ion felt the air shimmer as he turned into his bear. Then he lifted his head and roared. But this wasn’t a challenge, this was a call to arms; he was calling the others to join him so they could hunt down the snake who had done this to Ion’s mate.
An attack on one of them was an attack on all of them, made worse because it had happened on Bear Creek territory. Unforgivable, and inexcusable. Will would hunt them down, and make sure the snake knew never to set foot on their turf again.
In his arms, Etta groaned. With his attention firmly fixed on her, trusting the others to avenge his honour, he scooped her up into his arms and let her curvy body rest against his. She murmured something he couldn’t understand, and he kissed her forehead, hoping to make her believe she was safe and he was here for her. The bond between them, a bond she didn’t understand, meant he would fight to the very end for her.
Taking care not to slip over on the wet ground, he made his way back to the hangout. In the distance he heard the sound of the bears in the trees, calling to each other. He couldn’t fully understand them—his bear senses dulled when he was in his human form—but he was sure they had got their man.
Feeling more confident, he dropped down out of the trees and onto the road. It made the going quicker, which was good; he knew he had to get Etta treated for the bite before it made her too sick. Ion kept casting worried glances at her. She looked in pain, her face creased in discomfort even as she lay in his arms.
“Where are you taking me?” she asked.
“You’re awake,” he said.
“Yes. It hurts. I need to see a doctor.”
“I know,” he said, nodding. “I’m taking you back to the hangout. From there I can call Dr. Ben over in Bear Bluff. He’ll come straight out. Do you know what kind of snake bit you?”
“A man snake,” she said and he wondered if she was delirious.
“But what did the snake look like?” he asked, knowing the best treatment would be from antivenin, but that would only work if they knew the kind of snake that had bitten her.
“It was a copperhead. But it was a man too. You were right.” He sensed her heart rate quickening.
“You have to stay calm,” he said. “The less you move, the less the venom will circulate.”
“Am I going to die?” she asked.
“No,” he said harshly.
“Why do you care so much? If I die, the case against you would be dropped.”
“If you die, my life will be over.
