Chapter 13: Friday 22 to Sunday 24 July

Isle of Wight

“I don’t know why you got us involved with all this,” Fergal said as he got into the car outside Jane’s cottage.

“Don’t blame me. We both thought it would be interesting.”

“But now we’re involved in God knows what and with God knows who. I’m not happy about it at all.”

“You’ve been enjoying yourself,” Skye pointed out.

Fergal reluctantly allowed that. “Up to a point, but I really don’t like getting us involved in doing the bidding of people we can only ever refer to as ‘them’.”

Fergal made a show of concentrating on pulling out of the difficult junction onto the main road so Skye waited until they were in the stream of traffic before changing the subject. “Do you think Jane is right with her idea that someone is out to get anyone connected with the Schreiber family? If they are they’re going about it in a pretty convoluted way, aren’t they? It’s all pretty far-fetched, isn’t it? Why would whoever it is go to all the trouble of framing her and now, possibly, Alex? Why not just kill them if they hate them so much?”

“I’ve been thinking about that. I reckon that whoever is behind it just wants them to suffer. Perhaps they themselves suffered, or thought they suffered, some sort of miscarriage of justice and wants anyone connected with whoever it was who caused it to suffer impotent rage, frustration and anger.”

“Surely Gordon, and whoever he’s in with, are in a far better position to find Alex than we are. Why does he need us?”

“I’d say that was so he can say, on oath if necessary, that he wasn’t involved.”

Skye waited for Fergal to explain more but he said nothing, apparently concentrating on his driving as he negotiated a group of cyclists.

“Why would he need to do that?” she persevered.

“In case it all comes to court. If Alex were to be charged then it seems likely that Gordon would act in his defence so he can’t be involved now, can he?”

“Why not?”

“It might give the prosecution something to work with. Conflict of interest and all that.”

“So he wants us to find Alex for him. Okay, I can see that, just, but why did he give us all that history about Berndt? It certainly wasn’t just that he thought we might be interested.”

“No, there was definitely more to it.”

“Such as?”

“If I had to put money on it I’d say he wants us to know who might be involved, Michael Fox for example, so we understand just how far back it all goes and how deeply entrenched people’s ideas will be.”

“So who are these people who have deeply entrenched ideas? Most of them are dead.”

“But there is always the next generation, isn’t there? What I mean is he made very certain we understood that quote about the sins of the fathers, etcetera, didn’t he? Let’s go through them one by one starting with Richard Mackenzie.”

“He’s dead with no living children. Jane, stepdaughter, completely not in the frame,” Skye said firmly.
