“Cooper?”
Someone was standing over her. Her eyes fluttered open, and she saw that she was lying in the aisle of the synagogue. People were looking down at her, and all she could see was a forest of black-trousered legs and the hems of dresses.
Elizabeth. Suddenly she remembered what had happened. She had to see if Elizabeth was still there. She tried to sit up, but the pain in her head forced her back down.
“Don’t move,” someone said. “We’ll help you up.”
Several arms went around her and helped her stand. She could see that everyone had gotten up to see what was going on. “That’s the girl,” she heard someone say. “The one who told them where the body was.”
“Are you all right?” one of the men holding her up said.
Cooper nodded. “I just need to get some air.”
As they helped her to the back of the synagogue, Cooper realized that she had fainted. Even worse, she had interrupted Elizabeth’s memorial service.
“I’m sorry,” she kept saying as she walked slowly down the aisle. “I didn’t mean to.”
“It’s okay,” Annie said. She and Kate were beside Cooper, walking with her. “Don’t talk.”
When they reached the back of the synagogue, one of the men offered to call a doctor. But Annie told him that Cooper was just overheated and tired, and that they would make sure she got home. After they were satisfied that Cooper would be all right, the men left the girls alone.
“What happened back there?” Kate asked. Because she had been sitting on the other side of Annie, she hadn’t witnessed any of what had occurred.
“Cooper saw Elizabeth,” Annie explained. “She was trying to tell her who the killer was. Were you able to find out, Cooper?”
Cooper shook her head. “She was pointing at him, but it was too much,” she said. “I couldn’t handle the pain.”
Now that the pain was going away, it was being replaced by anger. She’d had a chance to catch Elizabeth’s killer, and she’d blown it. If only she’d been able to hold out for another few seconds. Then she had a thought.
“Did anyone leave?” she asked Annie and Kate. “When I fainted? Did anyone get up and leave?”
Kate and Annie looked at one another. “Everyone got up since the service was pretty much over,” Kate said. “People were moving all over the place. Someone could have skipped out.”
“But he could still be in there!” Cooper said. “We have to try again.”
She tried to get up, but her knees gave out and she sat again. She knew she wouldn’t be able to handle another experience like the one she’d just gone through. Besides, something told her that Elizabeth’s killer was long gone.
“Another one of your mysterious episodes?”
Cooper looked up. Amanda Barclay was standing in front of her.
“Where did you come from?” Cooper asked. “Hiding underneath one of the pews?”
Amanda frowned. “Why wouldn’t I be here?” she asked. “After all, it was me who discovered the link between Elizabeth Sanger and Christopher Barrons. And I didn’t need any visions to do it.
