By the time the sheet rockers decided to knock off for the day, Jake was exhausted. Being out so late the night before had taken something out of him, and by the way Pete’s crew was dragging as they left, they were feeling it as well.
Jake went home, showered, and changed. Although he was tired physically, his mind wouldn’t settle. He couldn’t get his mind off the police possibly identifying him with their cameras, or what William had suggested about them headed for a revolution.
His mind was still buzzing when he arrived at Monica’s house. When she opened the door, it was obvious she and her father were watching television coverage of the previous night. Monica waved Jake in through the screen door. Clive turned off the television. Jake noticed Clive stare at the blank screen as if he were adding up something, or trying to get his facts straight.
“Are they still making us out like a bunch of thugs?” Jake asked.
Clive looked at Jake blankly, as if he just realized he had entered the room. “Huh?”
“Is it still slanted?” Jake asked.
Monica touched her father on the shoulder. “Daddy?”
Clive broke his trance. He stood and shook Jake’s hand vigorously. “Hey, Jake. How was work?”
“Okay, Mr. Lombardi, uh, I mean, Reverend.”
Clive slapped Jake on the back. “Clive, Jake! No mister or reverend. It’s Clive.”
Jake pointed at the TV. “So is the coverage still bad?”
Clive looked at the television as if he had never seen it before. “What? Bad? No. The word is getting out, Jake. They couldn’t bury it forever. This coverage we just watched didn’t talk about the numbers, but KDKA broadcast the numbers a few minutes ago. It’s just a matter of time, Jake. The message will get out.”
“What numbers?” Jake asked.
“The dead. Seventeen total, only five of them were police. The police shot twelve rioters. That’s it!” Clive smiled.
Jake’s jaw dropped. “Seventeen? That’s it?”
Clive rubbed his hands together. “Yeah, that’s it. Nothing compared to Philadelphia. There were definitely over a hundred in Philly.”
The plan had actually worked. Who would’ve thought they could overwhelm the police with so few casualties. He looked at the reverend with admiration.
Monica added, “And the bias is getting better too. KDKA criticized the police for opening fire on the crowd from the roof of police headquarters.”
Jake pointed at the TV even though it was off. “Yeah, that’s who shot the guy standing in front of me.”
Clive grimaced. “Monica told me about that. I’m sorry you had to see that so close.”
Jake put his head down, remembering scrubbing his face in the shower the night before.
Clive said, “And you’re sure he died?”
Jake nodded. “His head—”
Monica said to her father, “I told you.”
Clive shrugged. “Sorry, I just wanted to be sure. He was obviously one of the seventeen. With such a small number, over the next few days the news should get full bios on all of them.
Jake wasn’t sure he wanted to know any more about the man.
Monica said, “I can’t believe you were that close to the killing, what if…” She shook her head and put her hand over her mouth.
