CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

After the October half-term holiday the Springfield Hotel was very quiet, but Robbie managed to keep the hotel open by advertising special offers of weekend breaks. He needed less staff so, apart from Lynda, there were now only a couple of local girls who came in when needed. Lynda was worried, and confided in Rose as they went for one of their regular walks along the coast. They were wrapped up warmly against the cold November wind which gusted in from the sea.

‘There are only four guests booked in next week. Robbie won’t need me, and I can’t let him keep me on if there’s no work.’

‘He wouldn’t do that. Don’t underestimate Robbie, he’s a business man. He used to run his own company in Liverpool and knows all about balancing the books. He won’t keep you if the hotel can’t afford you.’

‘That’s what I’m afraid of. I can’t see him needing me much longer. And where will I go?’

‘Home?’

‘Oh, don’t look at me like that, Rose. I can’t face the thought of going back to Milfield, I really can’t. I’m so happy here. I’m a different person here.’

‘Are you?’

‘Yes, I’m Lynda Collins again. And I’m a lot happier being Lynda Collins than I was being Mrs John Stanworth! Please don’t tell me to go back. Ted didn’t go back to Sheila, did he?’

‘No. He stayed with me, and it was the right thing for him, and for me.’ Rose patted her arm reassuringly, ‘I’m sorry, love, I don’t mean to push you into doing something you don’t want. It’s just that I thought you might want to go home for a visit at Christmas.’

Lynda, too, had been wondering about that.

‘I don’t know. Part of me wants to, but the idea scares me a bit. But I do know that I want to keep working here.’

‘I think you may be able to. Janet’s told me she’s going to visit Loveday Manor in the New Year. Tom has asked her to go and spend some time with him and Mark. She hasn’t seen them since the summer. They usually comes down at Mark’s half-term holiday, but Tom couldn’t manage it this year.’

Lynda had noticed that Tom Meredith hadn’t come back to Springfield since that day on the beach, and that moment which she’d found herself thinking about every day.

Rose, unaware of the thoughts disturbing Lynda, continued, ‘So I think you’ll find that Robbie will be asking you if you could take over some of Janet’s work for a while.’

‘Oh, that would be great.’

‘And he’ll probably ask if you’ll be able to work over Christmas. The hotel is fully booked all through December, so you’ll need to let him know in advance if you’re going to need any time off.’

She paused and watched Lynda carefully, ‘Time to spend with your family, for example. What are you going to do about Christmas, Lynda?’

‘I don’t know.’

The little furry jacket that she sent for Michael had a hood with cute little ears on top, so he would look like a little bear.
