Chapter Two
The panic that invaded Heidiâs voice made Lee wonder if she knew more than she was letting on. âYou donât want us to look for your family and friends? Donât you want to know who you are?â
She dropped her head, staring at her lap. âYes, of course, but...â
âBut what?â
When she lifted her gaze to his, her beautiful brown eyes shimmered with tears. âWhy was I running through the woods? How did I get hurt?â She touched her forehead. âHow did I get this gash?â
âYou think someone is after you?â
âI donât know.â With a deep sigh, she settled back against the raised bed.
âSo you donât want us to put your picture out and see if anyone knows you?â
She kneaded her fingertips into her temples. âNot right now. Iâd like to try and remember who I am first. I just canât get past...â Nibbling on her bottom lip, she averted her eyes.
âWhy you were running as if someone were after you?â
She nodded. âEarlier today, I had a dreamâno, nightmare. Someone was chasing me and it looked like I was in a wooded area. He caught up with me andââ she connected with his gaze ââand he was trying to kill me. What if thatâs true? What if thatâs why I was running when you saw me?â
âThe only two men we know were in the woods were these two I showed you.â He pointed to the redheaded man. âThis guy is dead.â Then he tapped the photo of the guy with the bushy eyebrows. âDon Frist is in jail. If they were after you, youâre safe.â
But why would they have been after her in the first place? All the policeâs quiet inquiries around town about her identity had hit a dead end. No one knew her and there wasnât anyone fitting her description missing in Sagebrush. But could there have been a third man in the woods that day? Theyâd thought there might have been. Would she be able to tell them if she remembered?
âGive me a chance to recall first. The doctor said my memory could come back at any time.â
He didnât want to tell her heâd already told his captain he was going to do some checking in the surrounding towns. He could still do that quietly, go through the police in those towns, and check their missing-personâs reports. For some reason he felt responsible for her. Heâd captured her in the first place, when she tripped and fell while he chased her. Sheâd hit the ground hard. Heâd always wondered if that was what had caused her to lose consciousness. âHave you talked to the doctor today?â
âNot yet, but last night he told me he wants to make sure the swelling has gone down. If so, he thought I could leave here in a day or so.â
âWhere are you going to go?â
Her light brown eyes widened. âI donât know. Did I have a purse with me?â
âNo, but you had some money stuffed in your jean pocket.â
âHow much?â
âFour hundred in twenties.
