They left half an hour later and paused by the Daimler. âGod, you were a bastard back there,â Hannah said to Dillon.
âHe certainly was,â Ferguson said, âbut it worked.â
âIt was all those years ago, but the SS training never goes away,â Dillon said. âThe shouted command, the harsh voice, and the response is a reflex.â
âAnyway, now we know where Max von Bergerâs millions came from,â Ferguson said.
âAnd canât do a thing about it,â Hannah said.
âWeâre also in possession of the uncomfortable fact that in 1945, Hitler made a peace overture to Roosevelt and Roosevelt took it seriously enough to send Jake Cazaletâs father to Sweden to discuss it with Hitlerâs representative,â Ferguson said.
âBut, sir, if nothing came of it, does it matter?â Hannah said.
âOh yes, my dear, it most certainly does. And the involvement of the Presidentâs father makes it worse. The media would have a field day. Roosevelt, Cazalet and Hitler.â He shook his head. âIt could do the President great harm.â
âAnd, at the worst, finish him,â Dillon said.
âYes. Come on. Letâs go see von Berger.â
âIâm your man,â said Dillon, and hurried to his car.
As the Daimler drove away, Hannah said to Ferguson, âI hope the old lady will be all right, sir.â
âYes, Iâm sorry about that, but it had to be done.â
âWhat do you intend to say to the Baron?â
Ferguson smiled. âI havenât the slightest idea, Superintendent.â
Newton and Cook let them leave and then followed. Twenty minutes later, Newton called. âWeâre just passing the Dorchester. Theyâre turning into South Audley Street.â
âFine. Hang around, in case I need you.â
Rossi switched off his phone and turned. âIt would seem they intend to pay us a visit.â
Max von Berger smiled. âWell, that should be interesting.â
