Chapter Seven
“You were good, in those negotiations earlier,” Bridget said.
Sean paused.
They were lying in bed, Bridget’s head resting on his shoulder, and he’d been idly tracing patterns into her skin with his fingertip. “I wasn’t sure how much you were paying attention. You’ve really won O’Leary over. And the Sokolov lieutenant seemed to like you.”
“I worked as a waitress in Dublin. You have a lot of tables, and coworkers all asking you for things—you get used to paying attention to several things at once. Multitasking.” Bridget shifted a little, her hand sliding across his chest. He liked that feeling—getting to hold her, and having her drape herself across him like this, trusting, almost like a big sleepy kitten.
“Sokolov liked you. I think he was kind of guiding you through the negotiations because of that. But you were doing very well. Being diplomatic and charming but firm.”
“I should put that on my dating app. Diplomatic and charming, but firm.”
Bridget laughed softly. “You sure didn’t have a problem taking charge when you were fucking me.”
“You liked it.”
She shivered slightly in his arms, and Sean felt a surge of predatory pride at getting to feel just how much she’d enjoyed that. “Yes. I did. But I think—you just knew what you wanted to do to me, and you were in charge, and it was really, really hot but it also… I think you could be more like that in your business, too.”
“Treat business like sex?”
“You know what I mean, Sean, don’t be a bastard.”
He grinned. “But you’re so easy to rile up.”
Bridget lightly pinched him, and he winced, chuckling. “All right, all right. I see your point.”
“Your father raised you to know all of this, clearly. You should just… act like you’re in charge, and people will follow you accordingly. You had no doubts when we fucked, you knew you had it all in hand and that it would all play out the way you wanted it to. People want to see that from the head of the family as well, to know they’re in safe hands.”
“I just don’t like the pressure,” Sean admitted.
He couldn’t tell this to anyone else because, well, who was there to tell? In the mob you didn’t really have friends. You had lieutenants and grunts and runners—you had employees. Underlings, the servants to the king. And you had the other kings as well, the other families, but who from them could you really trust, anyway?
“My father was strict and firm but fair. Too strict, I think. Mother softened him but then she died, and I think that’s why Patrick ran off. He knew without her that Father would just get worse and he didn’t want to wait and stick around for that shit. But I was the heir, and I’d never leave Father alone, to have him lose his sons as well as his wife. I think it was real selfish of Patrick to do that.”
Sean shoved away his bitterness. This wasn’t about his brother, or how Patrick had abandoned him just as surely as he’d abandoned Father.
