Saturday morning
CLINT and Lucien had celebrated long into the night, finally succumbing to sleep well after midnight. In fact, Clint was shocked when he awoke and saw that the clock on his dresser indicated that it was almost eight, which was a near record for him when it came to sleeping late. Lucien appeared to be sound asleep, so Clint slipped quietly out of bed, dressed, and made a quick run to the nearest McDonald’s. When he returned to the house, he peeked in the bedroom and saw that Lucien was still out cold, so he laid their breakfast out on the kitchen table and took a quick shower.
As he emerged from the bathroom, Lucien was beginning to stir, so he walked over to the bed and kissed him. “Good morning, sunshine,” he said. “Breakfast is in the kitchen, come and get it before it’s too cold to eat.”
Lucien yawned, stretched, and said, “Give me a minute in the bathroom, cher.”
“I’ll be waiting.”
Lucien came into the kitchen a few minutes later, dressed for the day and ready to go, so Clint said, “How in the world did you shower and shave so quickly?”
“For one thing, cher, I shaved while I was in the shower.”
“And the other thing?”
“I was hungry, and that’s always an incentive to speed things up.”
“I’m afraid the food has gotten cold,” Clint said.
“That’s why God invented microwaves, cher.”
“Yeah. Have a seat and drink your juice while I take care of that.”
Later, as they relaxed in the back porch swing, Clint said, “What’s on your agenda today, Lucien?”
“You mean, besides unpacking?”
“Yeah.”
“I’d like to go over to the GWU campus and locate the actual buildings where my classes will be held, so I won’t waste any time Monday.”
“We can do that.”
“You don’t have to go with me, cher. That is, if you don’t want to do so.”
“I don’t mind, and after you’ve seen what you need to see, I’ll take you to lunch in Georgetown.”
“As long as you let me lead the way,” Lucien said. “By that, I mean that I want to choose the correct Metro lines both there and back.”
“Sure.”
“And when we come back, I want you to show me how to find those grocery stores. I wasn’t paying attention last time.”
“I can do that.”
“It’s gonna be a wonderful summer, cher,” Lucien said. “I know it already.”
By the time Clint headed to work on Monday morning, he was convinced that Lucien was absolutely correct. Calm down, Clint, or the ever observant Lucy will notice the little spring in your step and start interrogating you again. Somehow he managed to get through that week at the office with no comment from Lucy, and it was nearing the end of the following week before she finally cornered him over lunch.
This time, he was more than ready for her when, with almost the first bite of her lunch, she said, “Clint, you’ve been in an extraordinarily good mood for the past couple of weeks. May I inquire as to why?”
“It’ll be easier to show you than tell you.
