Chapter 17

Magic Bus

Waking to the sound of her hotel room phone ringing, a bleary eyed Clara fumbles for the receiver, mumbling, “Hello?”

“Good morning Ms James, this is your wake up call, breakfast will be delivered in twenty minutes,” a perky front desk receptionist announces in an immaculate British accent.

“Thanks.” Clara gets out of bed and drifts off to the bathroom. She hears the shower start next door. Jack must be up too... I wonder what adventures today will bring?

With a towel wrapped around her head, Clara races from the bathroom to answer her cell phone. Not recognising the number, she hesitantly answers. “Clara speaking.”

“Kia Ora, Clara, it’s Detective Sergeant Charlie Rogers. I got your message via Sven,” a deep voice booms over the line.

“Oh, hi Charlie, it’s been a while.”

“It sure has. Look I know it’s early there, but we are in the middle of an operation and I just need to confirm what you’ve seen before we initiate our next search warrant,” Charlie explains.

“Okay, I’ll be quick. I saw...” Clara divulges everything she can remember about Margaret Johnson, the Friday Kiwi Con sighting, the argument between Cat and Margaret in the street, the diary entry being erased and adding the meeting with the Police Commissioner and Margaret in the café.

“E hika! The Commissioner again! We’re finding that he’s got his fingers in a few pies. Tēnā rawa atu koe, thanks so much Clara, I’ll need to set up a formal interview over the phone at some stage, but you’ve been invaluable in helping this case and probably others we are just starting to uncover!”

“Look Charlie, there is one other thing, I have a few photos on my phone of Margaret and the Police Commissioner, I’ll email them through to you if you can text me your email address?” Clara adds, “Hey take real good care of my friend, okay?”

“I’m doing my best for Sven. She’s a feisty one, as you well know. We’re taking it slow and steady, but it’s damn good to have her back in my life,” Charlie confides. “Excuse me Clara, my partner Rex is trying to say something... Yeah Rex, it’s a go... sorry Clara, I have to go, thanks again, ka kite āno.”

As she disconnects the call, there is a loud knocking at her door. Opening it, she is greeted by a pumped-up Jack.

“Ok up you get sleepyhead.” Jack walks in with their breakfast. “Oh, you are up. You must be keen. Eat up. We have thirty minutes before the bus leaves. The bus stops right outside, so not too far to go.”

“Good, plenty of time to eat and enjoy a coffee while I check my emails,” Clara finishes drying her hair.

“That’s a great idea, not much coverage in the compound. I normally head into Pokhara to an internet café a couple of times a week,” Jack advises.

“Oh, so the school is out of Pokhara then?” Clara asks.

“Yeah, it’s near the village of Khapaudi. Still on the lake and lots of rice farms. It’s very beautiful,” Jack replies.
