After the awkward beginning to the night, we’ve had a surprisingly good time. We ate burgers as she told me all about her life, traveling from city to city. I’ve told her about my time playing football and starting up Flex with TJ, and how my family is doing. It’s turned out to be an incredibly relaxing evening.

The one thing we haven’t talked about is our shared history. The time we were together and how it ended. I don’t think either of us wants to disturb the fragile ground we’re on right now. I’m just enjoying the time with her.

Just as we’re getting ready to leave, someone approaches the table and asks me for an autograph for their kids. It hardly ever happens anymore, but often enough that I still try to wear a cap or sunglasses when I go out. Smiling through a selfie and a couple of signed napkins, I glance over at Poppy to see that she’s deep in thought. When we leave the bar, she’s still quiet.

“I’m sorry about that, it never really happens anymore. Not since I stopped playing.”

She stops walking and turns to look at me.

“Don’t ever apologize for the success you had. No matter what, be proud of everything you achieved.”

I know she’s right, and it’s not that I’m not proud, but my playing pro was ultimately what caused us to fall apart. I can accept responsibility for my actions, but even before that, the tension that being apart for so long caused was picking at the seams of us. I don't want to throw it in her face, but I should have known she wouldn’t dwell on the negatives like that.

The urge to kiss her is bordering on uncontrollable, so I do the only thing possible in that moment. I bite my cheek and pray that I can keep a lid on it for a while longer.

When we continue walking, she asks me if this was what I originally planned for tonight.

“Definitely not,” I answer on a laugh. “Let's just say my plans were a lot more cheesy than this.”

“Tell me,” she says with a grin, bumping her shoulder against my arm. The sparks that are always present when she touches me flare to life.

“Oh no. we’ve had a great night, I’m not ending it with you laughing at me.”

“Why would I laugh?” She turns her head slightly to face me and once again, my breath disappears at the sight of her. She steals all the air from my lungs whenever I get a glimpse of her. God, what I wouldn’t do to freeze this moment. Her standing close enough to touch, the evening sun long since set, leaving the bright moon to cast pale light down on her. She’s perfect.

“Let’s just say that it was completely the wrong first date to plan for our situation.”

Her breath catches on the word date, and I’m worried I’ve spooked her. I’m right that my original plan would have backfired spectacularly, though. Romantic picnic and candles would have had her running a mile from me.
