They were on the I-5, speeding, in less than ten minutes after they had completed fueling.

Chloe had run inside the store, smiled widely and tossed a large roll of bills.

They had been involved in a shootout that had destroyed most of the pumps. They’d set a vehicle ablaze.

That didn’t mean they were thieves.

‘Cameras,’ Zeb realized suddenly. ‘There’ll be security cameras at the site.’

‘Taken care of.’ Broker grinned. ‘I fired an EMP burst. That should damage all their electronics.’

‘Where did you and Bwana disappear?’

‘We ran to the store. There was a large box filled with sandbags, outside. We hid behind them.’

Zeb nodded absently. He had noticed the box but hadn’t paid it much attention.

‘You’re okay?’ Broker looked critically at him. ‘You’ve taken a lot of hits.’

‘I’ll survive. That armor’s doing its job.’

‘It’s the latest. Still under trial with the NSA,’ Broker said proudly. ‘I finagled several sets for us.’

‘That lighter,’ he asked after a while, ‘it’s the one I gave you, isn’t it?’

Zeb couldn’t contain his smile. ‘I thought it was a good time to test it.’

Despite what Hollywood portrayed, dousing a vehicle with gas and throwing a cigarette at it didn’t do much.

The lighter Broker had given each of them had an incendiary fluid that ignited and accelerated a blaze.

Zeb sobered quickly. ‘Tur,’ he said. ‘Any idea what he meant?’

‘No.’
