Chapter Five

Winter clutched Ember more tightly, her arms wrapping around his waist. What the hell is that?

His strong body felt solid beneath her touch, and his warmth surrounded her. It made her feel safer, even as she stared at the terrifying changes just beyond the shattered windows. The world outside looked as if a nightmare had swallowed it whole. But Ember’s explanation seemed inadequate.

“Wizards?”

They’re real?

He nodded and pulled her back, holding her out in front of him. His intense silver eyes caught hers, and the love in his gaze took her breath away. “I need to go out and take care of this. You need to stay here. Do you understand?”

He’s leaving me now? He can’t be serious.

“No,” she whispered. Another flash of red lightning lit the sky filled with rolling red smoke. “What’s happening?”

“Just trust me.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “And whatever you do, don’t let them near you.”

Every dragon in the restaurant left their mates behind as they stalked silently into the street, rage radiating from them. The dragons, who had just moments before been enjoying a nice evening outside, were rushing their mates into the stores lining the street, as if to protect them from some great disaster. Are wizards their enemy then?

What are these creatures?

Were they like the ones described in books and TV shows? Or were these strange beings from another world more lethal? More dangerous?

It was strange to think that only a couple hours ago the dragon-shifters were the most frightening beings she’d encountered. Now, she longed for the safety she knew Ember would bring.

What could these wizards possibly be that they frighten dragons?

In the street, the shifters transformed into dragons and dashed into the sky in a flurrying of movement. Moments later, their fiery anger lit the sky and the smell of smoke filled the air. Their roars seemed to shake the building around her, and all the women looked up at the ceiling with matching expressions of fear.

Winter shivered and took a step back, speaking softly to herself. “Can I really just stay here and wait for whatever is coming?”

“Do you have a dragon’s protection?”

She whirled to stare at a woman with stunning auburn hair and glasses. She was wearing a cook’s jacket, and stood with her hands on her hips, as if ready for a fight.

“Excuse me?”

The woman spoke again, lowering her voice. “If you have a dragon to protect you, do what he says. As for me, I’m getting out of here. No job’s worth this.”

The earth shook beneath their feet, and the other women cried out. They backed further away from the window, and the panic in their eyes made her own heart beat faster.

Suddenly, dark shapes began walking past their window.

For a moment, she wasn’t sure what they were. Their movements were fluid. Like ghosts. And then, one of them froze and turned toward their restaurant.

Time seemed to slow as it raised its hands and pulled back its shadowy hood.

Huh?

She hadn’t known what to expect, but he certainly wasn’t it.
