Chapter 15: Josh
This must be what waking from the dead feels like.
Consciousness returned to me little by little. I found that my eyes were closed, and it was nearly impossible to open them. When I did, I was still groggy and disoriented.
It took almost a whole minute for me to figure out where I was.
I was lying on my side on a hardwood floor, which was covered in a thin layer of loose hay. It was dark, and the smell in here was strong and pungent: sweat, sawdust, manure. I’d smelled this smell before, as a kid at summer camp when we went trailriding in the mountains.
Horses.
I was in a stall of some sort. But how did I get here?
“You’re finally up,” a male voice spoke.
My neck ached when I tried to turn my head. There was Rollins in the corner, and I finally remembered.
I touched my nose. The residue of the powder flaked off onto my fingertips. “Where am I? What is this stuff?” I said, my voice harsh from disuse.
Rollins laughed and stepped out of the shadows towards me. “You’re inside of Garland Grayback’s stables. And that’s powdered nightshade. It weakens shifters. A big dose knocks us out, as you’ve already learned.”
I hastily wiped the rest of the stuff off my face, feeling more and more awake with each passing second. Then, I took a look at myself. I was naked, though miraculously, I was still wearing my towel around my waist.
Breathe, I reminded myself. I was trained not to panic in crisis situations. Instead, I was supposed to assess my circumstances and figure out a game plan. I knew where I was, and I was unharmed. I just didn’t know why.
“Why am I here?” I finally asked.
“Isn’t it obvious?” Rollins barked. He took another step towards me, and that was when I noticed the long knife tucked into his belt. Its blade glinted menacingly in the moonlight coming through the slatted windows. “We want Kaden.”
Slowly, I stood up, keeping my eyes on the knife. My voice trembled slightly when I spoke. “So why ambush me and not Kaden? Why didn’t you go directly to the guy you really want?”
Rollins laughed, and it was a chilling sound. Earlier when I’d visited with Kaden, Rollins had seemed pathetic compared to the two other alphas in the room. But now, with just the two of us in this horse stall out in the middle of the woods, he was downright scary.
His fingers danced over the handle of the knife, like he was teasing me. “Because the best way to hurt him is through hurting his fated mate.”
My eyes snapped from the knife on his hip to his face. “Fated mate?” I echoed, confused.
