Scale model by Dina Salem Levy depicting a set design for Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire (1912). This labyrinth of mirrored walls complicates the perception of the three-dimensional space in such a way that there is no longer a structure of foreground/midground/background. Although there are multiple walls, each area of the set is visually borderless. The eyes of the viewer can never settle on a focal point but have to constantly shift their focus: an asset of contemporary composition.

A contemporary approach to composition is then concerned with:

•Unframing: multiple and overlapping frames that prevent framing itself result in the loss of linear perspective, of the vantage point and of a central point of focus, instead producing an all-encompassing periphery that offers multiple and changing viewpoints.

•Three-dimensional complexity within which the body has a dynamic and unfixed sets of positions in space

•Branching: transformation through repetition.
