“X, you and this Ben guy are driving me crazy!”

Me too, Arson. Me too, Exa thought to herself.

“I’ve got the bag,” she announced, changing the subject. She increased the speed of her stride, trying to reach her car before it started pouring down. It was already sprinkling. “I’m heading to my car, and then I’m coming home,” Exa said into her comm device.

“We’ll meet you there?” Arson replied.

“Twins,” Exa called out.

“Yeah, boss?” They answered at the same time.

“Be careful. Let me know when you’ve…” Her plan had been to say, let me know when you’ve made it home. Since she was trying to treat them the same way she treated Arson and Snake from now on, she shouldn’t baby them. What to say? Exa cleared her throat.

“Check in when you get home, Duo,” Arson said.

Exa smiled. Thanks, Arson.

“Will do,” the twins replied.

Now that everyone knew what they had to do, Exa dialed the volume on her comm-device down and continued walking. Damn, she’d run farther than she’d thought. It was times like these that she was grateful for all the training the organization had put her through. Her stamina was on point.

That didn’t mean she wasn’t irritated with the fact that she had to walk a couple of blocks to get back to her car. Damn, Ben. Who told him to chase her and corner her like that? What was she going to do about Big Ben? She couldn’t stop replaying their conversation over and over again in her head. The sincerity in his gaze had surprised her.

She knew he was another hitman hired by the judge to take her out. Yet, he behaved differently from those who’d come before him. He hadn’t taken any pictures of her. Not that she knew of. And even though she’d shot him, he’d yet to try to end her. But he did keep asking her about her job. Was that the judge’s new angle?

Instead of killing her, did he now want to expose the organization she worked for? If she brought any more trouble to the agency, she’d be kicked out for sure. Not happening. She didn’t know how to live the life of a civilian. Where would she work? A restaurant? A hospital? This job was all she knew.

Even if she did change jobs, she had no previous experience to put on a resume. Exa smiled as she pictured a HR rep staring down at her resume and reading over her previous employment. Executioner. How would she explain that? She couldn’t. That’s why she planned to do whatever she had to in order to keep her current job.

If she didn’t handle this issue with Ben well, she’d be doing missions like her current one for the rest of her life. She wanted to go back to the old days. The days when she worked solo on higher level cases. If she didn’t properly take care of this situation, she’d never return to her former glory.

The rain started falling harder. She looked up at the night sky.
