Chapter 13

Shaun followed me up to the door. I stopped and picked up my car before going back to Reed’s house. The drive felt long considering everything that was running through my head. Reed turned when I entered. His ear was pressed to the phone. “I think it’s about time you star—”

Reed held up his finger to stop me. He nodded his head. “Yes, I want to know as soon as possible.” He hung up the phone without a goodbye. That was strange. I wondered who he was talking to.

“So, you decided you trust him, now?” Reed glared at Shaun.

“I do. We have some things to show you.”

“Well, by all means have a seat.” He moved to the loveseat, leaving a wide space next to him. I knew he was looking for me to sit by him. I wasn’t going to play his games. I handed him the printout with the numbers.

“Any of those look familiar?” I was tired of only getting information out of Reed after he was backed into a corner.

He took the paper and flipped through the pages. “This is from one of ours.” His eyes narrowed. “Is there something you’d like to ask me?” His gaze held Shaun’s. “Please, do tell our young detective here what happens to vampires who speak against their sires.”

His eyes narrowed. “That depends entirely on the sire. A good man wouldn’t be threatened by some simple questions if he didn’t have anything to hide.”

I smiled. I knew there was a reason I liked him. “Do you know who that phone number belongs to?” I asked.

He set the papers on the table next to him. “You already know I do.” He slowly licked his lips, his eyes steady on Shaun. This display of dominance was getting ridiculous.

“You need to start telling me what’s going on. Why would someone take Laura to lure me to them? You mentioned keeping me safe. Why?” I asked. Obviously Reed knew what was really going on, and I was tired of being kept out of the loop.

“We can have this conversation as soon as he’s gone.” Reed stood and made his way to the liquor cabinet. He poured himself two fingers of whiskey, swirling it around in the glass before taking a drink.

“Are you serious? He’s helping me, unlike you apparently.” I sat on the arm of the chair and crossed my legs. “He got me the numbers. Now, who do they belong to?”

“Another Raven, he’s an older vampire. You are going to need me if we have any chance of going against him.” Reed took another drink from his glass.

“Why does he want me? The only reason I can figure he took Laura is to get to me. It has to be a trap. I just don’t understand why.” I waited. Reed was the only one who could give me the answers I needed. By the tightening muscles of his jaw, he knew he was going to have to tell me.

“They wants you because of me. It’s the same reason they took Laura.
