CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Stop for a second,” Tommas said.

His hand on Evelina’s side tightened, keeping her from rounding the last few steps. The muted voices of the guests still echoed down the hallway, leading her to believe that no one had missed their absence.

Thank God.

“What?” Evelina asked.

“Let me see you for a moment before we face everyone again.”

Why did it matter?

Tommas urged her to turn and with his steel-blue gaze that was usually emotionless and detached, he looked her face over. Silently, he pulled out the cloth napkin from his suit pocket and wiped at the edge of Evelina’s mouth. Heat pinked her cheeks.

Tommas chuckled. “Don’t be embarrassed, Eve. It was just a couple of smudges from your red balm, I think. Nothing too noticeable.”

“You noticed.”

“Yes, well, I knew what you were doing. I drew a conclusion. The rest of your face is fine, by the way. Theo only messed your pretty mouth up a bit. I’m sure you didn’t mind.”

Evelina dropped her gaze. “I shouldn’t have done that at all.”

“In this house?” Tommas laughed loudly. “Probably not, Eve. Neither should I, really. We’re in the same boat, you and I. Attached to people we can’t have.”

“I’m not—”

Tommas cocked a brow, quieting Evelina instantly. “You’re going to deny what you were doing when you know exactly what I was doing in the very next room?”

“No.”

“Then what were you going to say, hmm?”

“That I’m not very attached to Theo. We’re not a thing or whatever. Not like you and Abriella are.”

Tommas scoffed. “I beg to differ. Maybe it’s not the same thing, but no woman of your name and status would risk herself the way you did a few minutes ago with a man like Theo DeLuca unless you were looking for something, Eve. It doesn’t have to be love—”

“It’s not.”

Of that, Evelina was most sure.

“—for it to be something,” Tommas finished quieter.

“What is your point, Tommas?”

“Things have a way of growing something bigger, Eve. Be mindful you don’t end up in my situation.”

“I’m not even sure what your situation is.”

“A difficult one.” Tommas offered her an easy smile. “But that isn’t for you to concern yourself with. I did want to ask, though, did you follow me downstairs?”

“No. I wanted a break.”

“Good. I didn’t mean for you to walk in on … that.”

Evelina frowned. “I knew she would be mad.”

“That isn’t what I mean.”

She knew what he meant.

“You’re not mine, Tommas,” Evelina said simply.

Tommas’ smile faded slightly. “I’m not. You’re right.”

“And I don’t expect you to be.”

“Well, thank you for not making a scene and for turning on the washer. I suspect that was your doing, yes?”

Evelina nodded. “It was.”

“As for Theo …”

Shit.

“What about him?”

“Was he the one you went missing with last week?” Tommas asked. “Please don’t lie. It won’t make my choices any easier.”

“What choices?”

“Just answer my question.”

Evelina blew out a quiet huff. “Yes.”

“And the mark I found. Is that his, too?”

“Yes.”

“And there’s no other man you’re involved with?”

“No!”

Tommas’ eyes widened at her outburst. “I just wanted to be sure.”

“I’m not a whore, Tommas.
