iffany called later that day, around five, to inform Aya that she wouldn’t be able to make it to her house that afternoon. It was all just as well, the blonde couldn’t see herself having any company anyway. Not now that she was in such a vulgar mood. The anger had dissipated, actually, it seemed that almost all of the anger that had been swelling just below the surface had, and now all she could seem to do was sit at her kitchen counter in stunned silence, a cold compress taped over her knuckles to keep her from dropping it. Then again, dropping it would involve moving, which she hadn’t done much of since she hung up with Tiffany.

Her eyes settled on Tonto and Ranger, who’d just run into the kitchen. For a moment, she almost forced herself to stand and retrieve their mealworms, but then she realized that they hadn’t ventured into the kitchen for food. In fact, now that she was watching, her attention on something other than her best friend bailing on her and the fact that she’d busted her stepmom’s nose like a watermelon getting smashed with a hammer – or was it pumpkins they smashed, she could never keep that straight – she realized that Ranger was terrorizing Tonto again. The albino ferret really didn’t seem to mind it too much, racing around her stool to get away before skidding to a stop and facing off with his brother.

A little giggle escaped her as she watched the two clash, wrestling each other to the ground and rolling around on the linoleum, heedless to her distress. But that was just what she needed, a little comedic relief. “You two,” she began, shaking her head at the pair woefully as she watched them play, “there really is no hope for you.” Ferrets just weren’t the types of animals you could really domesticate much beyond litter boxes. She imagined owning them was a lot like having a pair of weasels living in your house, minus all the mess. They rarely ever made any messes at all, mostly because they spent a lot of time napping in clothes hampers.

She was still watching them, grinning as they played, when she heard a knock on the door. Stretching herself out, she headed toward the front of the house, skirting around the two little fur balls as she did so. Pushing them gently with her foot, she claimed, “You’re going to get stepped on if you keep flopping around in the middle of the floor like that.” Neither of them so much as glanced at her, too busy nipping at each other’s ears. There was really nothing anyone could do to stop them from fighting, she’d learned that the hard way.

Another, more urgent knock came as she stepped out of the kitchen and into the living room, eliciting a heavy sigh from Aya. “I’m coming!” she shouted, annoyance obvious in her tone. What could possibly be so important that someone would keep
