Chapter Sixteen

Bright and early Tuesday morning, Wendell Noland knocked perfunctorily on Sera’s front door and let himself in, calling for her as he wandered through the house.

“Back here, Dad,” she hollered, and rose from her desk, placed in the tiny third bedroom she used as an office. In a few days, she’d begin ripping out paneling in the library, now that the carpet was up. Jack had promised to help her install sheetrock in its place, and once it was up and painted a soft yellow, she’d refinish the floor, a sturdy hardwood the previous owners had covered with lime green shag carpet for some bizarre and unknown reason. In a few months, if she was patient and worked hard, she could move her office there and redo this room as a guest room.

For that souvenir she’d brought home from the Outer Banks.

She met her dad in the kitchen, stood on tiptoes, and kissed his weathered cheek. He was a handsome man, young looking in spite his fifty-eight years and decades spent out in the sun building other people’s homes. His silver eyes normally glittered mischievously, his buoyant humor highlighted by the laugh lines radiating away from them. Today, they were serious and sober, not a trace of mischief in sight.

She dropped onto her heels and choked down the worry gripping her throat. “What is it? Is Mom ok? Has something happened?”

“No, nothing like that.” He yanked off his battered Atlanta Braves ball cap and beat it against his thigh. “You got a minute?”

“For you, I have lots of minutes.”

She poured him a glass of sweet tea from the pitcher she kept in the fridge and perched on a seat across from him at the dinette. “So, if it’s not family, it must be business. Everything ok?”

“It’s not that either.” He ran a thumb down the condensation gathering on the side of his glass. “Candi let it slip to your mom that you’re dating the Ewart boy.”

She bit back a sigh. Her sister-in-law was the sweetest woman on the face of God’s green Earth, but she had loose lips, something Sera should’ve remembered before spilling the beans. “He’s not a boy, Dad.”

“Says my little girl.” His smile was gentle, teasing. “What are you now, fifteen? Sixteen?”

“A lot older than that,” she retorted. “Levi’s a good man. We haven’t known each other long, but I’ve known him long enough to be sure of that.”

“I know he is. Known his parents for years, remember? Coming from his family, he couldn’t be anything but.” His smile slid away, replaced by furrowed eyebrows and pinched lips. “It’s his family that might be the problem. He tell you anything about his heritage?”

She sat back in her chair. “He said they were culturally distinct and gave me the abridged version of one of their legends. Seven sisters who were cursed to immortality. Why?”

“The folks in Tellowee are...different.” He sipped his tea, set his glass down. Picked it back up and took a much longer swallow. “Not all of their legends are mythical, if that makes sense.
