Chapter Nine

Good thing I had the corn halfway to my mouth and hadn’t taken a bite yet, or it would have been all over the place. Spit take for one, please.

“What—? You can’t… Huh?” Yeah, real smooth. She’d stunned me.

“I’m a nurse. That doesn’t mean I know everything, but maybe I can help.” Nicole shrugged.

“I’m recording this.” Albert smirked.

“Yuck it up, but I’m serious.” Nicole frowned at her brother. “I know we can’t have outside help, and that’s fine, but maybe we could run some tests. Small ones at first, like with the animals. Then work our way up to minor injuries on humans.”

“I don’t think it works that way.” I frowned. My appetite was leaving fast, but the food still looked really good and I needed to refuel, so I kept on eating.

“Walk me through it. How do you feel? What goes on in your mind when it’s happening? Is there some kind of process?” Nicole leaned closer to me.

I must have looked crazed because Albert stepped in.

“Okay, sis, I get that you’re fascinated, but let’s give Kent a break. He’s been through a lot. We can grill him more later.” Albert stood then took his plate off the table and headed to the kitchen.

“I’m sorry, Kent. I’m just excited about helping you and… I don’t know…being alive. ”

After one more bite of the potatoes, I put my fork down. I was full. For now. I really didn’t know what to say. Nicole was thankful and wanted to help, but did I want it?

“I get that you’re excited. When I first got my powers, I was too. Until the time I passed out and freaked out my parents. Growing up, it was all about hiding. I’m still hiding and I don’t think that will ever change. If someone found out what I could do, they’d probably lock me up and run tests on me. I want to know more about my powers, but not at the expense of my life. It isn’t much, but I like it. And, you know, I’d miss having free will.” I chuckled.

“That is a big issue and believe me, Albert and I don’t want you to be exposed. That isn’t what this is about. You helped me. I want to help you. Will it work? We won’t know until we try, right?”

Nicole had a good point. What would it hurt? It wasn’t like I wouldn’t use my powers again. Have you met me? I mean, it didn’t take much convincing for me to heal Nicole, the aftereffects being what they were. I barely knew her brother, but I’d had to do it. It was like I was compelled to fix all the people. I didn’t think about it. I just did it. Sure, it hurt when a person died. It happened. When it did, I was depressed for days after. It sucked, but it didn’t stop me from trying again. It wasn’t in me to give up.

“Are you at least thinking about it?”

“Didn’t I
