All prosthetic coverings are custom made from a unique blend of silicone polymers. This truly marvelous invention is a second skin. Silicone resists high and low temperatures and is well tolerated by the body. It is easy to repair and offers a translucent, specially pigmented appearance, which is colorfast and long-lasting. Custom veins and freckles are cast onto the wax. Only you will know it isn’t real.

“How right you are,” Danielle murmurs. She smiles as she recalls the quizzical look the saleswoman at the supply store gave her when she told her she only wanted to buy the prosthetic covering, not the prosthesis itself. She shoves the box back under the bed, puts on her pants and shoes, and goes to the hall closet. Inside are her packed bag, purse, laptop, papers, cell phone and her freshly printed, computerized plane ticket.

At best, she may find exactly what she needs to raise reasonable doubt in the jurors’ minds: that Jonas was self-inflictive and suicidal before he went to Maitland. She can also find out why Dr. Jojanovich referred Jonas to Maitland—and why Marianne chose Jojanovich in Chicago if she lived in Pennsylvania. He may be aware of other psychiatrists who will be able to support her theory. At worst, she will be back tonight in time for the hearing tomorrow, with no one the wiser. Her cell phone will not reveal her whereabouts should Sevillas or Doaks try to call her, and if they want to see her, she can plead illness. She makes a quick call to Georgia and begs her to fly down from New York that evening. Georgia tries to make Danielle explain why she needs to come and what is so urgent, but Danielle puts her off, telling her that she can’t explain now, and that Georgia just has to trust her that her presence is crucial. Apparently the desperation in Danielle’s voice convinces Georgia. She agrees to catch the next flight.

She takes the key to her apartment off of her key ring, opens the door and slips it under the mat. Georgia will be here tonight. Danielle is flooded with relief. She could never leave Max—even for a night—without knowing that someone who loves him as much as she does will be there in her stead.

Before she can change her mind, she takes a last look around the apartment. When she slams the door, the lock clicks with an ominous finality.
