Part 4

Liam

Chapter 14

The Royal Offices of the Adinan King were large, stately, and decorated in subdued colors. There were black drapes for the windows, in keeping with the Adinan custom after a family member had passed. Similar drapes would be hung in the bedrooms, and the bedclothes would be dyed black if a husband or wife had passed.

The King's massive desk sat at the far side of the room, dominating that end of the huge room. Three huge windows stretched out behind it, bathing the room in the mid-afternoon light. Bookcases filled with books, treasures, and other odds and ends spanned the long wall from the desk to the sitting area which was comprised of a large leather sofa and matching chairs.

Liam was currently quite grateful to whomever had designed the office. The chair he was ensconced in was comfortable enough that it was offsetting the aches and pains he'd accumulated on the trip to Adina. Traveling for two weeks in a rickety cart had done him no favors, but Liam wasn't going to complain. The original plan had been to leave him behind until he was well enough to travel, and that hadn't been conducive to his plans.

Glancing over at the couch, Liam smiled reassuringly, but Leyton just looked away, looking small and miserable as he slouched in the corner of the couch. Leyton was still upset with him, but Liam didn't really blame him. He would fix it, though, despite Leyton's objections.

Shakil and Temel were having a hushed conversation against the far wall, just out of range of his hearing. Shakil was looming, but Temel didn't seem to notice. That relationship hadn't particularly surprised him—Shakil liked challenges, and he also liked being in control, though he'd deny it if Liam ever mentioned it. Temel was obviously a challenge, and given what Liam had gotten from Leyton on the subject, he preferred not to be in control when it came to bedroom activities.

The door to the secretaries' office opened then, admitting the 14th King of Adina. He didn't look surprised to see them there, so someone must have informed him of their arrival. Leyton shifted, but kept his gaze focused on the floor. Liam glanced at him, worried briefly, but there was nothing he could really do for Leyton at the moment so he focused on the new King.

Mijah Kundashi was young for a King, if Liam's information was accurate. He was just shy of 30 years old, the youngest son in the royal family, with two older brothers: Temel, excluded from the line of succession because of his magic, and Ghalib, the former Crown Prince, assassinated along with the former King.

He didn't have the international diplomatic experience Prince Temel did, but he was better known within Adina than Temel was. He'd been the face of the Crown for his father, sent to deal with problems and ceremonies that required a royal presence within the country. He was also known for being a bit of a philanderer, though Liam didn't doubt that behavior had tapered off after his experience with Leyton.
