Chapter Four
DATE THREE: JAMIE
Talk about explosive.
Jamie was more than the other dates combined. He was just so attractive, with his gelled-back blonde hair and his blue-tinted sunglasses.
Oh, my heart.
Our date was a lunch date, he had me meet him at a sub shop and I was definitely not opposed. I waltzed up wearing my cutest top and mini-skirt (having learned from my date with Mark – I mean, not that I expected a repeat but, just in case).
He already had a table for us when I walked in. There was a pitcher of peppermint and rosemary lemonade already on the table (a weird house specialty that I had never been brave enough to try).
I gave him my biggest smile and threw my arms around him for a hug.
I was less shy, these days.
Shyness seemed a moot point when two out of a group of four friends had already seen you naked. I was more than certain word had spread, so it didn’t seem fitting to act shy. In fact that seemed a little bit ridiculous.
“They asked us if we wanted to start with a salad or something,” he said. “I told them I didn’t think we were in that sort of place. Also, you look really nice.”
“Why, thank you,” I settled down in my seat. “I do try.”
“You succeed.” He bounced his eyebrows and, honestly, I loved that. I thought it was quirky and cute. “How has your week been, going on all of these dates?”
Whoa, what a question. I let out a sharp breath and grinned. “It’s a lot,” I said. “But it’s a lot of good experiences. I have never been so…sought after?”
“I find that hard to believe,” he reached out and took a glass of his lemonade. I wasn’t sure I was brave enough to try it. Luckily, there was also water. “You’re the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen.”
“Now you’re just trying to get lucky,” I pretended to pout. He laughed.
“Hardly,” he said. “I’ve never had to try this hard.”
The waiter came back by and we swept risqué talk underneath the rug for the time being. He ordered us food and we ate together.
And even though we kept the topics general, I could still tell he was the more sensitive of the entire group. Something about him. It was difficult to explain.
When lunch was over he stood, extending his hand to me as we stepped around the table. “Can I walk you home?” He asked. “It’s a really nice day and I don’t think you drove since we’re just up the street.”
“I didn’t drive,” I confirmed for him. “And, yes, I would love it if you took me home.”
He smiled and I settled my hand in his. He squeezed my fingers and we started off in the direction of my house.
The conversation remained pleasant and general, but the longer we were together, the harder it was to pull my focus away. Maybe it was just the sight of him in the natural sunlight. The way his black t-shirt hugged his muscular chest, the way he moved with such long, easy strides.
