CHAPTER 17

It was still dark when I opened my eyes. Night-time dark. I blinked, waiting for my vision to focus.

A cool breeze blew over my skin, raising goosebumps. I appeared to be lying outside again. I reached out, patting the grass beneath me. It felt like normal grass, but the odor in the air was strange. It felt woodsy, earthy, with a hint of a masculine scent, as if Old Spice had been pumped into the atmosphere.

“Psst!”

I jerked and blinked furiously, trying to clear my vision. The night sky above me came into focus. The stars were bright in a cloudless sky.

Too bright. And… was that another moon?

Oh, fuck. This was not Castlemaine.

“Hey,” the voice whispered again.

I rolled my head to the side towards the sound of the voice, despair and frustration overwhelming me. I wasn’t home. I was so tired. If the owner of the voice wanted to eat me, then I was okay with it.

My eyes focused. The voice belonged to a young boy. He stood in the long grass a few feet away, looking down at me. Eleven or twelve years old, maybe. The kid was shirtless with dark-brown skin, glowing amber eyes ringed in thick black lashes, and a wild mop of the darkest gold hair that trailed down his back in a spectacular mullet. Thankfully, his ears were perfectly round. Not a pointy edge in sight.

“What are you doing here?” he hissed at me.

“Losing the will to live,” I muttered, staring back at the odd stars. There was a third moon over on the horizon—a tiny sliver of crescent glow in the inky black night.

The boy frowned, apparently contemplating my words. “Well.” He scratched his bare chest. “Do you think you could lose the will to live somewhere else? You can’t be here.”

I groaned and rolled into a sitting position. “And where is ‘here’, exactly?”

The boy stared at me like I was an idiot. “My mother’s yard. This is her grazing field. I’m on guard right now,” he hissed, looking left and right nervously. “You need to leave.”

“I will, kid.” I wrapped my hands around my legs. “As soon as I can stand up and figure out how to leave, I’m out of here.” The ring on my finger tingled; I lifted my hand to my face and cursed it.

The stupid thing had malfunctioned. Unless the whole earth had been shunted off course and flung into another galaxy, this was not Castlemaine. “Why are you guarding a field at night?”

The boy looked down at me again. “I’m not guarding the field. I’m guarding—” He cut himself off, pressing his lips together.

Despite my bone-weary despair, a small smile pulled at the corners of my mouth. The boy’s thoughts provided the rest of the story. Two faces appeared in the pale-blue aura in front of him—a man and a woman, both with similar coloring and features to the boy. In his thoughts, they were kissing.

“Aww.” I smiled at him. “You’re keeping watch for two lovebirds. Forbidden love, huh?”

The boy frowned.
