Chapter Fifteen

Mason

The metal music was ripping through the car. I stopped at a stop light and a bike came up on my left. Looking over, the rider gave a slight nod at me and I nodded back. It was a male dressed all in black and leather. I couldn’t really focus on anything but Nora.

You fucking fool, the Corsican whispered.

You let her get away from us, he whispered again.

“What was I supposed to do, lock her in the closet?” I mumbled to myself pulling out my cellphone but noting that the light was still red.

The bike revved its engine some and it seemed that we were the only two vehicles on the road. I dared to look over again and found myself staring at the barrel of a hand gun. The organ pumping blood through my body seemed to sieze up right before dropping into my stomach. The assailant fired about ten times before speeding off.

Fortunately, this was the vehicle I usually drove Sebastian DeLuca around in.

Bulletproof glass had just saved my life.

There was no way in hell this fucker was getting away with what they’d just done. I hit the gas, ripping through the red light after them.

The entire town of Seattle seemed to be in a hazy fog this morning. There wasn’t a whole lot of traffic and the bike was getting further and further away. My eyes tried to take in as many details as I could. The only thing I could make out was the jacket the shooter wore had the outline of the Virgin Mary in white threads. The bike was a generic make with nothing standing out, all the identifying badges had been removed.

An elderly couple seemed to walk across the road out of nowhere.

I slammed on the brakes coming to an abrupt halt. The old man shook his cane at me. My hands thumped against the steering wheel, wanting to hit the horn.

“Fuck!” I screamed thumping the wheel several more times.

I’d just had an attempt made on my life.

Finally, the couple made it across the road and I sped away knowing I’d never catch the person.

Hit man, the Corsican roared pissed off we’d almost been taken off the map.

Noting I needed gas, I went to a more secure area where I could hurry and fill up. While the gas was being pumped, I called Matteo.

“Special Agent Matteo Zacharra,” he spoke.

“Really?” I asked.

“Sorry, busy day at the office, I didn’t even look before I spoke.”

I shook my head, leaning back against the seat. My adrenaline had me on high alert. “I think, someone just tried to kill me.”

“What?”

I cleared my throat, checking the rear view mirror, satisfied with seeing nothing. “Yeah.”

“Fuck,” Matteo said and I could hear the chatter in the background.

“And this… fucking…thing inside of me is going nuts.”

Matteo had a broken Corsican as I liked to call it. It rarely if ever called out to him which allowed him to live a relatively peaceful life.

“A-ahhh….it’s kind of busy at the office. Have you seen the news since last night?”

I laughed.
