When Kristen awoke, morning light peeped through the curtains. She reached over, running her hand over Sarah’s side of the bed. It was cold and empty. She pulled Sarah’s pillow to her face and breathed in her scent. She smelled like jasmine and sweet pea, a heady mix that was uniquely Sarah.

Kristen got out of bed and went in search of her. She didn’t hear her anywhere in the house. Checking the office first, she saw the computer had been left open. She sat in the office chair. Sarah had left her a note on the computer screen.

The note read, “Good morning, sleepy head. I hope I didn’t wake you. I thought perhaps you needed to recharge after last night. I’ve gone off to my water aerobics class. I can’t wait to talk again.”

Kristen couldn’t wait either. She moved to the window and gazed out at the winter wonderland. It had snowed again during the night. Everything was covered with a white, fluffy blanket.

Kristen mused about the previous night. It had been delightful, fantastic, amazing, and every other adjective she could think of. It was the best thing that had happened to her since her accident. Was she really calling it an accident now? Had last night changed things that much? Was she on the cusp of forgiving Dena? Her chest constricted at the mere thought of her former wife.

Kristen turned and looked at Sarah’s note. She knew that it would take more than a new friend to ease her pain regarding Dena. Someday, hopefully, her angry feelings for Dena would fall away, crumbling like a building imploding, dust and cement sending up plumes of white dust. That day wasn’t today. No, she was a long way off from forgiving.
