CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Teddy and Karen Wallace sat at a coffee shop three blocks away from Firebrand. Irina had begged him to stay for a drink and he’d almost obliged, but there were more pressing matters at hand. He did, however, promise that he’d be back later that evening and would take her out for a nightcap once her shift ended at ten o’clock.
They’d been there for over an hour. He hated the inaction but they were stuck, and Karen said that a hot cup of coffee always helped clear her thoughts.
Teddy thought that what she meant was a bottomless pot, quiche, and pie. For the past fifteen minutes he’d watched her jot notes down onto a small yellow pad that she’d pulled from the inside pocket of her suit coat. He admitted to himself that while he’d had a crush on her since the day his father had hired her to keep an eye on Sara, his mind, and libido, were now drifting elsewhere.
Irina looked amazing now that she’d gotten herself together. In a strange, roundabout way, down in that place where some thoughts are better left alone, he realized that if someone hadn’t threatened Sara’s life for a second time, he may never have gone back to Firebrand or crossed paths with Irina again, so this unfortunate situation had some silver lining to it.
And, best of all, now that he could simply admire Karen Wallace for what she was—a strong, beautiful, intelligent partner, rather than an object of desire—it might make their working relationship more efficient.
Right? He wondered if he should mention that to her. Would she appreciate it?
What would his therapist say? Or better yet, what kind of advice would Sara give him? She always told it to him straight, whereas sometimes he could sense that his therapist, Dr. Alan Hanks, might be telling him what he wanted to hear. Jim had likely paid the white-haired old kook too well to fit dear little Teddy into his packed schedule. Gotta keep those checks coming, Doc.
Teddy turned it over in his mind.
He could envision Dr. Hanks saying, “Teddy, my boy, the truth is always best, even when it’s a lie.” Or maybe that was Detective Barker, who was not his biggest fan and had a tendency to spread misinformation just to watch him squirm.
Sara would say, “Teddy, seriously…do you honestly think that Karen Wallace gives a crap about you? Has she sent you any signals of affection whatsoever?” Harsh, true, but Sara had a way of being able to read people like he couldn’t.
Was the Sara in his mind right? Did Karen Wallace give a shit?
Probably not.
He took a bite of a cranberry orange scone, grimaced, and said, “Ugh. Why would someone eat this on purpose?”
Without looking up from her notes, Karen smirked and said, “You ordered it.”
“Well, yeah, because I thought it sounded good. That tastes like somebody sprayed fruity air freshener on a biscuit.”
That got a sympathetic laugh from her.
Teddy washed the last of the bite down with a gulp of chocolate milk.
