“What did you dream?”

She’s watching me curiously because I do not answer for a long time. Finally, I lie, “Nothing. I dreamed of nothing.”

She tilts her head, still watching me. I open the book and clear my throat, preparing to read to her.

“I dreamed that you were standing beside me,” she says then, voice quiet.

I can’t look up at her; my heart is hammering against my bones, against my empty spaces, and everything is suddenly hushed and close. I swallow.

"Gray," Zelda says so softly.

I look up and up at the platform, at the beautiful girl on the platform, at the girl who holds my fate behind her own ribs, at the blackened veins that peek out above the collar of the white shift she wears. I press my hand over my heart, over the translucent scars I must never show anyone. My mother made me promise.

If you gaze at my scars in the light, they form the ghost of a very old tree.

“It was dark,” Zelda says, and she’s smiling a small smile. "There was music, I think. Strange music, not like any of the songs you've taught me. And we were together. We were standing together."

When she says nothing more, I widen my eyes at her, hungry for her voice. “What did we do? Did I...did I tell you a joke?” I manage to say, though the words are lighter than I feel. I have no jokes in me, have never had a joke in me.

“No,” she says, and it’s odd, the way she cocks her head, her eyes locked on something far away.

This is the day the world begins to unravel.
