that’s not bloody likely. Maybe you’re right.

Maybe I really fit in better here. At least the

Santuarians don’t seem put out by the occasional

loud argument. They just yell back, and that’s that.”

He grew serious again. “No, really, Kjell, I wish

you all the best. Let’s have breakfast.” That would

at least keep his mind off king-sized beds. He was

relieved and grateful that Kjell had backed off so

easily, but that also exposed how superficial their

relationship had always been. Yes, they had fun

and the sex was great, but for some reason Bengt

was reluctant to explore, that just wasn’t enough

anymore.

After seeing Kjell off at the entrance, Bengt still

had two hours to kill before his meeting with Alex.

He’d go stir-crazy here in the hotel. He went out

onto the plaza, which was buried in trash and

wilted flowers. Enough to make him wish for a

fresh breeze, and not only because of the heat. At

the other end, a few workers were taking down the

stage. Other than that, no clean-up effort was

visible.

The coronel the old woman had mentioned to

Alex stuck in Bengt’s head. There had to be more

they could find out about him. Remembering

Alex’s instructions, he picked his way through the

tangle of streets to the Comandatura One. None of

the desks were occupied, but when he entered,

someone came from one of the back offices.

“Señor? May I help you?”

Bengt had trouble remembering the rank

insignia, but recalled that Mendez wore the same.

“Buenos días, Capitán. I’m looking for your

cabo, Huelva.”

“It’s his day off today. Won’t you tell me what I

can do for you? You are the comisario. From ICE.

Right?” He beamed at Bengt. “Come. Sit. Have a

coffee with me. I have very much regretted that I

have not yet had the pleasure of making your

acquaintance, señor.”

Bengt was getting dizzy from the flashy smile

and the baroque politeness. He wondered whether

the capitán—his name tag said Ronda—had ever

considered a career as a toothpaste model. When

Ronda disappeared to get the coffee, Bengt

considered his options. Keeping Alex’s warning in

mind, he would try to be less direct. Unfortunately,

he was a lousy liar, so he’d best play what he was:

a stranger who didn’t know his way around.

“It’s fresh, I just made it. How would you like

it, señor, and don’t you say hot.” The arch

admonishment came complete with wagging finger.

“Sugar and milk, please. I need your help,

Capitán,” Bengt added before Ronda could unleash

the next volley of words.

“Por supuesto, I am wholly at your disposal, just

ask me if—”

“I have to contact someone. Unfortunately, I’ve

only been told that he is a coronel. With the

Securitas?”

When Ronda promptly paled, Bengt smiled

understandingly. “Sadly, I’m not acquainted with

anyone in the Securitas, and you’ll understand that

I don’t just want to ask a stranger. That’s when I

remembered your helpful cabo. But to have you

here personally is a piece of good luck I would

never have dreamed of.” The capitán’s flowery

style was contagious.

The poor man looked anything but lucky now,

though. “Well, I mean, I will of course do what I

can, but . . .”

“Of that I am convinced. Please believe that I

won’t let that go unmentioned in my report. If

you’d be so kind as to give me the names of those

with that rank, I’d be most grateful.
