Chapter Nine

HEATHER

I’m so lost.

I thought I had an idea about how tonight would go, but I was wrong. I actually had a really good time with Mason last night, and that fact alone is enough to leave me feeling confused. I didn’t think we’d have anything in common. I thought he’d be a cocky asshole because he’s so used to getting everything he wants with those good looks, especially from women. But somehow, I managed to forget that I hated him just yesterday. It’s like he’s turned into someone I like and not only like but want.

That dance was the most teasing experience I’ve ever had. The whole time, I kept having to tell myself no. I wanted to kiss him. I wanted to feel his lips with mine and taste the sweetness on his tongue. I wanted to feel the stubble of his jaw. And there were a few times when it felt like he was thinking the same. But he never kissed me, and I took that to mean we’re friends and we’re not to cross that line. But now that he’s dropping me off and he’s opening the door for me, I’m not so sure.

“Thank you for coming out with me tonight,” he says, closing the truck door behind me.

I nod and smile. “Thanks for talking me into it. I had a lot of fun.”

He chuckles. “I did too. Want me to walk you to the door?” He nods toward my door with his head.

I glance up the stairs and back at his dark eyes. “Nah, this was just a couple of friends having a night on the town, right? This wasn’t a date.” I shrug.

He nods. “Right, right,” he says quietly as though he needed the reminder. “Okay, then. I guess I’ll see you at work tomorrow?”

I nod. “I’ll see you then,” I tell him.

This is the point when I’m supposed to walk away. My feet are supposed to start moving, carrying me toward the stairs, but they’re not. I should be up at the door by now, but I’m not. No, I’m still standing in one spot, my eyes locked on his. He’s not walking away either. He could be back inside the truck by now. Instead, he’s still standing in front of me. Our eyes are locked together, and his tongue comes out and skirts across his bottom lip, wetting it. Electricity seems to be zapping between us. The air is pliable, thick, charged with need, with wanting and yearning. Something is drawing us closer. Somehow, in a hurry but also in slow motion at the exact same confusing time, our lips meet.

His soft but strong lips press against mine. My lips part, allowing him access to enter, and he does exactly that. His tongue slides into my mouth and moves against my own. The second I taste a flavor that’s all his own, a soft whimper escapes that’s hushed immediately by his lips. His hands move up to my face, cupping my cheeks and holding me to him.
