Sanctuary
Dita glanced at the one Cate was studying. It was a cocktail dress cut on the cross and in a stunning midnight blue, classically simple but very effective. “I think that’s my favorite. It’s not finished yet, needs a lot more thought.”
“I recognize that one.” Cate pointed to a basic outline of a dress that had started its creative life as a rough sketch over her photo in Capri.Dita went to pick it up and as she did, her fingers touched Cate’s.
She moved her hand away as if it had been burned, then tried to cover up her odd behavior. “I’ve made changes to it, remember?”
“Yes, I do.” Cate gave her a quick sideways glance, warmth in her eyes and a tender measure of understanding on her face.
Dita blushed, then moved away on a paltry excuse of looking for a sketch on the other side of the room. “I’m very pleased with what I’ve done so far, but the collection’s not quite there yet, and I can’t seem to get these right.” She pointed vaguely to several other outfits, aware that she was talking too quickly. “I know the material I want to use and the colors, but the pattern and cut has to be right and I can’t quite marry them all together, but it’ll come.”
“You’re very talented.” Cate didn’t hide her admiration and awe.
“I really mean it. You deserve to succeed with designs like these.”
For the first time since she’d entered the room, Dita actually looked at her directly, nervously biting her bottom lip and growing more uncomfortable by the minute.
Unable to bear it any longer, Cate put the sketch down. “I’m concerned that I upset you last night.”
“No,” Dita interjected quickly, glad that the source of her discomfort was out in the open. “No, I’m sorry, Cate.” She closed her eyes wishing the whole embarrassing situation would disappear. It wasn’t right that Cate was apologizing to her. Dita was the one who’d made the first move.
But Cate didn’t see it that way. “Why would you be sorry? I was the one who pulled back.”
“You probably think I make a habit of coming on to strangers.
I don’t. My behavior last night…I’d like to say it was the effects of what turned into a wonderful day yesterday, then complemented by a good meal, excellent company, and large amounts of fine wine.” Dita
