Chapter Five

Robert slowly lifted his head to look at Aimee.

She was wiping at the tears that fell down her cheeks. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

"We don't have time to indulge in grief, Robert," Moirin said. "The dark witch wants the forest in exchange for your familiar. We have to act, Witch of Light."

Robert rubbed his face with his hands. The use of his title helped clear the mental fugue into which he'd descended.

Aimee staggered back a few steps as one of the golden motes expanded until a woman stood between him and his niece. Robert had long since become accustomed to Moirin's otherworldly beauty but he realised her appearance, especially her pale, flawless skin and vibrantly white hair might be quite mind-blowing to his niece coming on top of the day's other shocks. The fae queen looked at Robert, sympathy in her large emerald eyes, before turning to Aimee.

Aimee shook her head. "I'm having a nightmare. I must be. This can't be real. It can't." There was a hint of hysteria to Aimee's voice.

About to rise and hurry to her side, Robert was stopped by Moirin's hand on his shoulder. "This is all too real, and born of your mother's jealousy." Moirin waved a hand airily. "Had she accepted that Robert inherited the power as Witch of Light, your relationship with him would have flourished as it should have. Instead, you and he have been kept apart, and you are ignorant of your fae inheritance. Most importantly, you would have instantly known Valda for what she truly is and seen through her façade. Instead, we must rally and find a way to recover Leander, your uncle's familiar and soul-mate."

"S-soul-mate? But, he was just a cat…" Aimee's voice trailed away. "He's a man as well as cat… somehow. Isn't he?"

A swell of pride suffused Robert. Despite all that had happened to her, Aimee was still thinking quickly, able to recognise Leander as more than just the cat she'd seen.

"Most familiars prefer a feline form. Some also take another. Leander helps channel your uncle's powers. His magic keeps the forest healthy, flourishing, a home to many fae and a source of positive energy for the mortals who walk through it and swim in its lake." Moirin rested her hand on Aimee's shoulder and squeezed gently.

"I was so angry when I came here." Aimee shook her head. "Everything had been arranged for me to stay with a friend. Then I was told I was coming here instead. I stormed out of the cabin the first day I arrived, but walking in the forest, I couldn't keep hold of my anger. I really wanted to swim when I saw the lake. And then I made met Valda and she seemed so fashionable and elegant. I was just so stubborn, so determined to continue with my anger against Uncle Robert. I'm so sorry."

"Don't blame yourself. Valda would have picked up on your dark feelings toward me. She probably hoped that through you, she could overwhelm me." Robert slowly rose to his feet, and wiped at the tears on his own cheeks.
