Chapter 44

The very next morning, Mark and Rebecca wasted no time in traveling up to Charlemont. It took nearly three hours to get there due to a recent blanket of eight inches of white powder. But the ski resort didn’t leave anything to chance. The snow-making machines were in full force to ensure all the trails were in peak condition.

Despite this being her maiden schuss down the modest slopes, Rebecca adjusted quickly to her first three trips downhill. Mark had skied before, but was impressed by how well his girlfriend picked up the sport.

The vigorous hillside excursions exhausted them. Mark excused himself from Rebecca who remained in the lounge, taking up every inch of an oversized leather chair. Her limbs were spread out like an octopus in her heightened lethargy, not willing to move a muscle.

Rebecca’s eyes danced around the huge room. What chill there was from the subfreezing outside air was quelled by a huge crackling fire in the stone-columned hearth. Coats of arms and even a moose head festooned the otherwise barren walnut walls. A towering, glittering spruce held court in one corner, blocking out nearly all of one of the multi-paned 20-foot windows. Its dazzling lights and decorative ornaments were a sure sign the holiday season was still in full swing. The tree’s strong pine scent enhanced the smoky fragrance of the burning embers in the fireplace.

Rebecca watched with fascination as the flames continued to perform a lively dance. Snap, crackle and pop. The fire was in perfect cadence as it licked the interior of the soot-caked brick fireplace.

Whatever cold Rebecca was feeling was further tempered by the ample and thick angora sweater and comfortable woolen jogging pants she wore. She scanned the enormous high-ceiling room and spotted two other couples also lounging on the furniture. One duo was close to her age while the other appeared to be in their late thirties. They smiled at her as she reciprocated the gesture.

Rebecca’s gaze then ventured toward the plush Kerman rug, lying in the center of the ivory stone-tiled floor. The intricate and colorful designs were both examples of exquisite beauty and artistic craftsmanship.

Finally Mark showed up. He was holding a large box of Cracker Jacks.

“Boy, I thought you might have gotten lost,” Rebecca snorted.

“Who, me? Nah. I just had to get this to munch on.” Mark offered the box to his gal. “Would you like some?” Mark even shook its contents to entice her.

“No thanks! Do you know how harmful that is for your teeth?”

Mark shrugged. “That’s why God made dentists.”

Despite not wanting to indulge in the caramel-coated popcorn-and-peanut confection, Rebecca didn’t mind sharing her space on the gigantic chair. She shimmied over to one side and patted the vacant spot for Mark to sit beside her. The teacher-in-waiting took her up on the offer.

Rebecca draped her arm across the top of Mark’s back as he reached for her hand. The amorous couple snuggled serenely before Rebecca sighed.

“Just think,” Rebecca opened. “We’re here right through New Year’s Eve.
