CHAPTER 14

The Broomwood Medical Centre was a small complex of buildings, with separate entrances. Monica and I went to the building where the waiting room was located. I asked the receptionist if I could see the doctor, and she asked, “Which one?”

“Boris Boggins.”

“I’m sorry, he’s busy.”

“I’ll wait. It’s a personal matter.”

“If you don’t mind waiting, it could be a while. He’s with a patient.”

“I don’t mind,” I told her as I sat down in a chair and pulled out my phone, starting a game of Candy Crush.

“What are you doing?” Monica asked me.

“I’m acting normal, that’s what. You know, non-suspicious,” I told her. “Maybe there’s a vending machine around here? I’m starving. I could do with some peanuts.”

“I don’t think they have those anymore, because of all the allergies.”

We had to wait a full fifteen minutes for Dr Boggins, but it seemed like an hour. Finally, the receptionist told us he was free.

We knocked on his door. “Can I help you?” Dr Boggins was a middle-aged man with a bald head and a full brown beard and moustache. He was wearing a white shirt and jeans. His eyes were bloodshot, and I was surprised to see he was sweating profusely, given the weather was cool.

“We want to talk to you,” Monica said, “about Coach Casper.”

“What about him?” It was obvious to me he was nervous.

“Are you detectives?” he asked us.

“We are helping the police,” Monica said.

Once more, it was all I could do not to gasp. Wasn’t impersonating a police officer a serious crime? I supposed she wasn’t impersonating an officer, simply saying we were assisting. Still, I figured it was probably some sort of crime. It couldn’t have been legal.

“Please have a seat. I can’t give you long, I’m afraid. It’s been a rather busy day. Been a case of one snakebite after the other.”

“Snakes!” I exclaimed.

He nodded. “Thankfully, nothing serious. No Eastern Brown snakes.”

“I thought it wasn’t hot enough for snakes at the moment,” I said.

He shrugged. That’s a common misconception. Now, what can I do for you?”

“You, no doubt, have heard of the murder of Daisy Dalflower?”

He nodded. “Who hasn’t?

“It is our belief that the coach was the intended victim.”

He sat bolt upright. “The coach was the intended victim?”

I nodded and tried to look serious. I mean, of course it was a serious matter, but I tried to look like a police officer rather than an amateur sleuth pretending she was assisting the police. “Our investigations are leaning in that direction.” I tried to think of all the expressions I had heard on Midsomer Murders.

I noticed the doctor’s hands trembling a little. “I see.”

“What I’m about to say is confidential, and you won’t get in trouble no matter how you respond to us,” Monica said. “Do you understand?”

He wiped the sweat from his brow. “I think so.”

“It has come to our attention that the coach was putting pressure on you to administer illegal performance-enhancing substances to the players,” she said.

The doctor looked stricken.

“We don’t want to know the nature of these substances, whether they were steroids, peptides, or whatever else.
