Chapter 5

Our first year was so much fun. I spent that year at home being his wife. I cooked and cleaned, and balanced our checkbook. That first year we went everywhere together. When he went to his away games, I was there. Even though I didn’t stay with him because he had to stay with his teammates, I was there. Cathy would come with me whenever she could. I spent our money on her the same way Reese did with me. His teammates made fun of him all the time about me tagging along, but he loved it. Reese told me that we didn’t need to be up under each other all the time that it was all right to do my own thing. My mother also complained the whole time. She didn’t want me to lose myself and be all about him. I told her I was just being a wife and she said, “What about being Deena?” She made me feel bad most of the time. One day I talked to Dawn and she told me my mother was just trying to warn me from heading down the same road she had taken. She lost her family for our father and when he left she ended up alone. It was so hard to be without Tyshawn that I didn’t know what to do.

After the season was over and we were home together, we went to see our families and took our mothers to California. All our siblings we took to Florida, to an amusement park. His brother baby brother Harris came to stay with us. Harris clicked with Cathy the moment he came. Tyshawn laughed and said his brother came to spend time with him and he never got to see him. She was pregnant by the end of the year.

I loved being with Tyshawn and his teammates but their wives and girlfriends couldn’t stand me. Since April was going down the list of the team, the men didn’t care. They all was with the same person since she gave good sex. Even though I didn’t talk to her anymore, Reese said I was guilty for just bringing her into our circle. I said I didn’t know what she was going to do. She laughed and said the men were all usually easy prey and were going to mess around either way. It wasn’t really my fault but the women needed someone to blame. When we would all be at events, I would always be the outsider. Reese didn’t care for the rest of the women because she told April to stay away from her man and she almost beat her up for just talking to Bishop. On my twenty-third birthday we went with Reese and Bishop to Las Vegas. For his twenty-fourth birthday, we threw a big bash in Reese and Bishop’s house. We set up a tent and had a masquerade party. I flew his family and my brothers down for it.

When his basketball contract was finished, he went to Florida and got a bigger deal.
