David Houston sat in the front seat of the BV 206, deep in thought, as it raced across the ice. Built as an armored personnel carrier to be used in the Arctic, the tracked vehicle with its V6 engine and wide tracks enabled it to travel in excess of thirty kilometers an hour over the ice. Aside from the driver and co-driver, the all-terrain carrier had room for six passengers. There were two BV 206s in the small column, each pulling an empty wooden trailer. Six snowmobiles followed close behind. Houston sat in the second of the two vehicles. Mikail, in the lead vehicle, guided them all toward Mitchell’s camp.

The sound of Houston’s secure satphone ringing shattered the silence in the vehicle cabin. He picked it up and saw the call was from Isa Soult. He’d hoped to avoid talking with Isa until he had taken possession of the bombs. The man may be financing the entire operation, but he had no idea how long things took to accomplish. His impatience galled Houston.

“Good morning, Isa, how can I help?” said Houston into the phone.

“Do you have the bombs?” asked Isa. His tone was brusque.

“No, not yet. I do, however, expect to lay my hands on them very shortly.”

“You said that yesterday and the day before. Monsieur Houston, I’m paying you a bloody fortune for those bombs. I need them delivered to Finland in the next twenty-four hours or this carefully planned out enterprise will have been for nothing.”

“I told you when we started this operation that things don’t always go according to plan. You should have thought of a contingency plan in case this one fails.”

“No, Monsieur Houston, it is this or nothing. The transport plane is already on its way to your camp.”

“Well, you had better wish me luck, then. Call me back in one hour and I’ll let you know how things turn out.” Houston hung up and powered down the phone. He didn’t want any more interruptions from his irritating employer. He glanced down at his watch. If Mikail’s prediction was correct, they would soon arrive at the hidden base’s location.

Houston’s world had changed so much in the past year. He had gone from being a multi-billionaire with a global oil empire to a man on the run. As far as he was concerned all of his troubles could be laid at the feet of two people: Ryan Mitchell and Grace Maxwell. Just the thought of them still alive made his blood boil. After barely escaping with his life in Albania, Houston had gone into hiding. The tens of millions of dollars he had hidden in banks in Switzerland, Venezuela, and China had helped him get back on his feet. His plan to reduce the world’s population by a third had not been forgotten, only put on hold until he judged the time was right to strike. Until then, he worked in the shadows obtaining oil companies that were on the verge of bankruptcy and turning them around.
